If I wanted to make a blu-ray...

All I would need would be a module(a dorcy or something), the diode( from the $20 803t sled's), the 5mW aixiz housing, a driver( a lava drive) and a power supply?Do the BR's function pretty much the same as a red burner( meaning I could use those guides to build my own?)

That list looks pretty good.

To answer your question on whether or not the blu-rays are the same as red: yes and no. As far as the wiring is concerned, everything will basically be the same. If you are using the lavadrive, just make sure to have the one meant for the blu-ray range. The basic difference between the two is the amount of current used. The strong red diodes can use as much as 400mA, whereas 400mA in a BR would kill it very quickly. But as far as wiring and mounting your module in your host and the build of the laser in general, everything should be the same.

Ok, the 32-150mA drive is on the way, and so is the aixiz module and diode. I understand that they need a lower current( I think the rcoemmended range is around 80-90 ma right?) but I have also read that they require around 5V to operate. So my quesiton is how could I achieve that without using some expensive/hard to find batteries with weird voltages? How do you guy power your BR's?
EDIT: how about 2x CR2's?

Actually, I think since you said you are using the lavadrive, which is a boost driver, you can pretty much throw anything under 5v at it. Dont quote me on that because I'm not 100% sure but I think the range is 1.5 - 5v input. So, you could be fine just using an AA or two. I would check his for sale thread to make sure but just one cr2 (or 3v) should be plenty.

Now if you're using a different driver, thats a different story. If it isn't a boost circuit you will need the 5v for the diode, plus an amount of voltage to compensate for dropout on the circuit. I think the lm317 has a 2 or 2.5v dropout, meaning you would need at least 7v to drive it.

Yes, the input voltage range is from 2.4V up to 5.5V or 6V with a diode to drop some voltage... (two 3V Lithium primaries or 3V rechargables)

But using a diode to drop some voltage means wasting some battery power for nothing.. When i started thinking about a boost driver it was to make lasers small. And such a driver operates best from a single Li-Ion. It uses it's capacity completelly, and the current stays the same untill the battery protection kicks in.


Scared me half to death a couple of times.. :) I wouldn't use unprotected rechargables tho, because the driver would work down to 2.4V and damage the battery.

Of course you could.. That would actually make MUCH better use of the batteries. Just like you said, double the capacity.
Which ones are you gonna use? The AA size or AAA size? Two of the AA size would give you around 10 hours with an efficient boost driver like LavaDrive.. Two AAAs would give you 4-5 hours..

You would have to do some wiring inside of course. Insulate the batteries in the middle and lead some thin (flat) cables next to the battery on the inner wall. But it can be done.

You can also just make a small laser instead.. :) Use an AA host. 5 hours is more than enough and you could carry it around all the time.


Those are some nice battery sizes. I only have the AA and AAA size Li-ions. And the prices are good. Thanks for the link!

I think I will have to wait till I find a host and see what will fit... TIme for flashlight shopping ! ::)

$50 really isn't too much for what you get with the kenom barrel. Everything is included, you just add the diode and you're done. Also, remember the heat sinking is so good on them that you not only get better duty cycles, but you may also be able to squeeze more power out of your build due to the diode staying cooler overall.

I mean if you do the math, the kenom barrel is maybe $15 more than you would spend on your other host + everything else you will need to complete it, and I think its $15 very well spent.

The Kenom has a driver built into it? I thought it was just the aluminum host...

The Kryton is just a host, but it comes with a driver. The driver is NOT "built in."
