How stable? 405nm diode out of LG GBC-H20L

I've got a thread over in the Red laser message forum about my LG GBC-H20L 6x blu-ray reader, 16x DVD-RW burner project, but I thought I'd post here for some insight about the 405nm diode.

I've got a DDL driver circuit and with a 9V primary input, the diode threshold is 28mA. What's a "safe" intermittant current to use with this diode? The diode has window on it, so I don't know if it's long or short -- but since it's out of a reader, I doubt it's got any high power aspirations.

I ran it all night at 50 mA and just bumped it up to 65 mA. Am I heading for disaster, or well within tolerance? I've seen some graphs with other diodes that have 28-30mA thresholds taking upwards of 70-80 mA.

Thoughts?
