How much will the price of blu-ray drop?

Well, the title says it all. What do you think that a 6x blu-ray burning pointer will cost in about 2 years? Will the price go down a lot?
It would be nice to get a 100mw+ burning blu-ray for under 100 bucks...

well you can get 20x dvd burners now for about $25 so id say in a few years a 6x blu ray will drop to around $100 if not cheaper. of course thats just a guess. as of right now you can get a 100mW+ blu ray diode out f the newer xbox360 add on hd-dvd drives for $50. don't know how long it would live though. i have to do some long term lifetime tests on them.

My opinion, is to around the cost of an equivalent red laser diode. The diode itself is minute, very little material, and the rest of the diode package is identical. Now that these are being produced 'at scale' I see no reason why they should be more expensive than a red. The material in the actual diode is an insignificant part of the cost, and even if the manufacturing process is more complex, once the initial R&D is recouped, this doesn't add much to the cost.

The early diodes were so expensive for several reasons - patent bullshit and attempting to recoup initial investment costs - which are valid reasons. At first only one company was making them, so they could pretty much ask whatever price they wanted for them. At this point the demand for blurays outside of big volume drive makers is tiny, so individual diodes can still command a very high price - and a very handsome profit for the manufacturer.

Believe me, once bluray drives become more common these diodes are not going to be any more expensive than red ones.

I absolutely agree, they will be as common as 650nm reds. But, I'd rather pay now instead of waiting for the price to come down in a year or two.

Is the reason to the price drop that more and more DVD players and burners will have blu-ray instead of red diodes?
If all of you are right, it seems to be a great future for blu-ray DIY:ers!

Any BR player that can play DVD and CD will have a red and violet laser diode.

If ordinary DVD will die, will red laser diodes become less common and expensive since thay are not produced at the same rate as before? :-/

Don't expect DVD to die any time soon. There are a lot of people that don't even have a high def TV. I've also talked to a lot of people that don't even plan on buying a high def media player. The cost is still too high for many people.

I wouldn't worry about DVD or CD players going away for a long time either. They still make VCRs and record players.

nobody uses them anymore with the fact that flash drives can be had at like 1gb for $10

I bet a laser tv would have lots of interesting parts inside it.
They're supposed to be going on sale in Japan at the end of the year.
Maybe in a few years someone on here will be posting pics of how to do it.
I wonder who will be first?

I still want to see cheaper blue dpss lasers. The cheapest 473nm is you can find is the $450 5mw swot series on Warnlaser. My blue RPL is great but it is too big, heavy and expensive to carry around with me. I dream of someday seeing $100 2mw blues on DX.

Speaking of DX, my prediction for next big laser there is some sort of blu-ray laser. If it's out there, they WILL find it.
