As ndrew said, there are many variables. However, I have a PS3 pointer that is over a year old. I have a PHR based laser (that I use almost every day) that is almost a year old.

The MTBF for most laser diodes is around 5000 hours at their rated amperage... Mind you, we usually run them way higher than their rated amperage, so all bets are off. It would also depend on heatsinking, duty cycle, ambient temperature, optical damage caused by reflections off the lens, relative humidity, dew point, sunspot activity, phases of the moon, and in general, the whims of the laser gods.

Don't forget the position of the solar system in relation to the galaxy. Galactic alignment is very important.
