Hello all, I've been staring at the lasers on this forum for too long with laser envy.

I would just buy one, as I have the electronic skills of well, dirt. but current debt and budget contraints (of my own fault) do not allow this option.

So I was thinking I have an Xbox HD-DVD drive I use as an external drive on my laptop which I almost never use, and wouldn't mind sacrificing to the cause.

Also I own a bunch of flashlights (yeah the other drain on the budget)  and thought I might have a suitable 3V lithium, or 3.7v Lion based flashlight. Looking over my older lights, I have a JIL-lite cr2 1.3w up. Here's some detailed info on it and the guts, I can't seem to post a link www[dot]cones-stuff[dot]co[dot]uk/Jil%20Lite%20CR2%201_3W%20UP.htm

Anyways I had a few questions right off, I'm not sure if it would be better to go with a 3V non rechargable or a 3.7V rechargable? I do have plenty of both.

Also I'm interested in the lavadrive, but I'm not sure it will fit inside, as the round circuit boards seem to be 15mm in diameter, where as the lava drive being 12mm x 12mm,  which works out to be ~17mm on the diagonal

Even if I were to trim it to 12mm x 10mm I think it would end up being ~15.7mm on the diagonal. I hope it might be possible to sand the thing down to a usable size. If not, would the Luxdrive micropuck be able to be modified to drive the laser with a resistor? It supposedly puts out 400ma?

Also which aixiz module would work best as a host for the laser?

If this works out, it would be a tiny blu-ray laser, possibly a burner...

Any advice would be appreciated. Also possibly what is a good multimeter to get and a good soldering iron for this.

Heck if any of you are interested in helping me out with any of the electronics work, I'd totally be up for shipping it to someone who knows what they are doing lol, as I'm probably going to destroy something.

-Thanks in advance

For starters, whatever driver the flashlight currently has needs to be capable of putting out ~5v for the blu-ray. 400mA will be more than enough to power it (you will only need 50-100mA depending on which sled is in your drive)

If you go with the lavadrive, low voltage wont be an issue because it's a boost driver. I do believe (but don't quote me on this) that there should be enough room to sand a few mm's off on the corners of the lavadrive.

As far as aixiz modules, just the standard '5mw" 650nm with the acrylic lens will be the best module!

Hope that helped... My brain isn't 100% right now as I'm super tired and about to hit the sack ;D
