OK about 4 weeks ago I stocked up on hosts, 803T sleds and some Lavadrives with the intention of getting busy with some laser action post-exams. Well exams are out of the way and you know what they say, idle hands do the devils work...so here's what he prompted me to build!!!!

I can't get any decent beam photos as our camera just seems UV blind, I needed smoke to see anything!

It's running a conservative 90ma with the Lavadrive, it lights matches, burns black tape....and my skin....I think all future models will just use the high-range Lavadrive to avoid the headache of swapping over the microscopic pots (I'm not known for my patience)

It's a 90mm long and ~18mm wide MXDL host

Now I've got the construction down, I can carry on with a few pioneer 300mw versions in Red and a few 100-125mw Blu-rays

That doesn't look like the MXDL I'm used too... :-? Do you have a link to where you got the host from?

Nice looking laser though :)

Hey man nice work [smiley=thumbsup.gif] looks great.

Blu-ray sure is fun isn't it :D, start popping balloons, blu-ray is great for that just make sure they aren't the fluorescent kind as they just convert alot of the energy and you just can't pop em, found this out the hard way, popped red ones almost instantly, while the flourescent ones just seem unpopable, took 10 min of pointing for me to come to this realization, thought something was wrong with the diode. Great fun though...:)

The 5W MXDL (CR123) is from the seller iolanieh on ebay..however typing in 5 WATT LED torch has thrown up cheaper suppliers for the same item.

Iolanieh does post very quickly though.

They're a good host, easy to reverse engineer just by unscrewing the +ve terminal and all the front literally falls out, give the lens part a whack, and you're done :)

Wow, that looks really nice. I'm in planning to build my first Blu-Ray. If you don't mind I have a couple of questions for you:
1. What kind of battery does it take?
2. Is the host easy to work with?
3. How long did it take you to build?
4. What kind of module did you use?
5. Did you encounter any problems while building it?
6. What did you use for a heatsink?
7. Did you have to modify the host?

Sorry for the 50 questions but I really like the looks of it. I hope my first Blu-Ray turns out good.

Thank you :)

OK here goes :)

1. What kind of battery does it take?
- CR123 Lithium

2. Is the host easy to work with?
- Yes, just a matter of unscrewing the +ve terminal in head to remove the front section. Fit the driver and bits into the existing inner housing, refit back in

3. How long did it take you to build?
- 3 to 4 hours

4. What kind of module did you use?
- 803T from Xbox360

5. Did you encounter any problems while building it?
- Fitting the lower range pot on the lavadrive...wasn't fun, will just use the highrange from now on turned right down to 100ma

6. What did you use for a heatsink?
- An Aixiz housing, some Permatex Ultra Copper RTV silicone to bond it into the aluminium sheath that inserts into the torch head, maintains thermal contact and makes the whole torch a heatsink then.

7. Did you have to modify the host?
- I timmed the +ve terminal down to give more room, literally cut it in half with a hacksaw, back to the thread (I'll get a pic of it as I'm making another couple today)

Can't upload any pictures though as my camera was kidnapped today by the wife
