Excuse me if I've poached this idea or concept...but

I was sitting here pondering the world, when I thought what if you could use the heatsink mounted BR Diode to your advantage when opening the can up.

I grabbed a trusty 4-pin diode off one of the 803T sleds and had a crack (nothing to lose)

Placed it in a vice, noticed the nice fraction of an inch that the top of the can protrudes the heatsink, then set at it with a decent swipe with a stanley blade. Like a semi-clean decapitation, off fell the top of the can!

If you use a nice sharp blade, you miss the internal gubbins and have a nice open can diode to play with, the heatsink is a good "rule" to cut against and holds the side of the can intact :)

Good Idea, That's usin' your head for somethin' besides a hat-rack ;D The only thing is I already asked about an open can 405 diode, & was told that one or more of the components inside deteriorate rapidly when exposed to the air, but it might work for an open can red, hmmm rob :cool:

IgorT ran numerous tests, not sure if he checked for an increase in power after this mod to a BR diode?

My first BR was an open can set at over 150mA for its glorious 7-week reign. [smiley=evil.gif]

Might want the vice facing a different direction for that.

If the can is pointing down, there's at least less dust getting to the chip, although there will still be plenty. If you stick the vice in a box of some sort and flush the box quickly with CO2 (heavier than air, so it'll stay in there for a while, too), that could also possibly help reduce the amount of contamination. Long gloves for sticking it in a module and then sealing the module so contaminants don't get in would also seem like a good idea. An inert atmosphere is probably not a bad idea (Helium can be had for a mint at a model shop, or Argon at some welding shops), either.

Bare chips are generally pretty sensitive, but as Kai indicated, it'll probably work for a while without any precautions.

Once you turn on the power, though, any impurities on the surface of the chip will be fused to it permanently.
