Just in case anyone is interested.. Here are some pics of an older (and dead) 25mw supposedly genuine Nichia LD, out of a Coherent Radius 405nm laser. Note the big square pink-looking power monitor photodiode at the rear of the laser chip.

Also worth noting is the COMPLETE LACK of ANY identifying marks :(

Hope this is of some interest...

Wow. Those are the best macro shots I've ever seen of a diode. These are very interesting to look at! Thanks for sharing! Any reason why the can holder appears to be black as opposed to the brass color I'm used to seeing?

ogoun;

Very nice macros.

It would be interesting if you could take some shots of the mirror facet in the front of the diode.

That is where "optical damage" will cause most failures of the laser diode.

@meatball: The reason the pics arent that good (can looks black) is that these were taken with the "joke" microscope (Olympus SZH 10). The illumination (to name just one weakness) leaves MUCH to be desired. At some stage we will rework all the optics on this scope.

If we were to use our custom designed die microscope, pics would undoubtedly be much better, but these diodes dont warrant that amount of effort at this stage, whereas the joke scope is a comparatively simple matter to set up and get pics out of.

@larrydfw: I'll see what I can do about some pics of the front mirror facet.
