Re: Freak 803T Diode **Mystery Solved**

Indeed, it shouldn't be possible for a normal diode.

I also have one of these diodes that keeps just going on, but I didn't dare increasing any more. It's not the most efficient diode, but the one with the highest knee.

It's the yellow curve in this graph.
PHR-803T.gif

I've ran it at 198mA for a few minutes total and it's been running it at 150mA / 140mW for two weeks now (casual use) and it's still going strong (my 9V NiMh does not supply enough voltage for the LM317 driver to reach the 198mA)

My "personal" blu-ray has been running at 190mA (180mW after Merideth glass) for over a month (almost daily use - 1 minute duty cycle) :)

I was GOING TO run my next experiment at 200mA. I guess I just jumped the experiment up 100mA more than I had intended with this mistake ;)

Peace,
dave

Haha, you're crazy man! I don't know what voodo you use, to make the poor abused diodes last.. Unless it's really about the lower efficiency.

But as you observed yourself, your latest victim obviously degraded A LOT, right in front of your eyes..

Too bad you don't know the voltage on this super-freak, so i have to guess, but the efficiency dropped to around 10.5%...
The efficiency of my latest personal blu ray diode is 18.5% at room temp, which is slightly above average.

So i'm afraid it'll just pop at a power up.. :(

I would really like to know what it would do at a more normal current (and when i say "normal current" i'm not talking about 180mA, Dave ;))... But at this point, i would not be surprised, if it would keep lasting at this current for a while, but would die instantly after setting it to 125mA..  ;D

Either that, or it would do 50mW.. :(

I've found that it seems to help if I hold my tongue in the right corner of my lips and "wince" slightly when I push the button. :D :p ;)

Peace,

I knew there must be something! ;)

Do you include this in the instructions for your lasers? ;D

I used to, but I discovered that not everyone is right-tongued. The left-tongued among us have been known to explode if they hold their tongue on the right side of their mouths while concentrating.

Don't ask . . . .It wasn't pretty :-[

wait, what? it hasnt died yet?

Immortal Diode.

isnt a 6x the same as the 803t?

I put it away until I can get a good heat sink for it. I want it to live as long as it can. I want it to see the sky at least once before it dies

I'm such a romantic ;)

I do not have a 6X in a form that I can do a comparison of them

And, NO. I'm not disassembling my 6X just to play with it's characteristics. The graphs of the two diodes appear to be different, but not much at powers below 170mW. There's not enough of the 803T's around running at or above 170mW to know. I'll keep making them and playing with them though. Very few people have seen what 180mW of blu-ray look like in the night sky ;)

I'm such a giver . . . .Is that part of being a romantic?

super freak -- super freak -- she's super freakaaaaaay

Oh, and at the higher currents the 6x's are way more efficient than the 803's... my 6x was doing over 200mW after optics at only 185mA. Another thing is that the 6x doesn't have the 'flat' looking beam likt the 803 diodes, it's a bit more 'filled out'

Re: Freak 803T Diode **Mystery Solved**

And the forward voltage of a 6x is around 1V lower... Voltage also matters in efficiency. So even if the 6x takes more current for the same power, it's efficiency could be the same or even better, than that of a PHR.

Did someone ever calculate the efficiency?

Hmm, efficiency involves volt too :-/ nice mistake for someone who studied electronics. I'll take back what I said about the knee being at the point of highest efficiency. Now I realize it is at the point of highest mW/mA ratio.

Oh, great.

and the flat beam is not very good, i dont really like it. let's give the manufacturers some time to make the diodes even better :)

My beam isn't flat, it looks like the ps3 (oval-ish).

Is that normal? :-?

They vary a little.. I've tested 29 diodes so far, and some are flatter, and the others are more oval.

But all of them are pretty flat. The difference is in HOW flat.. ;)

The flat beam is normal. It is an artifact of the shape of the crystal. Just focus it. You will not be able to see it when you are focused to a tight point (and it will burn like the dickens).

Quite honestly, I don't care how the beam looks when it is not focused. That's not where I use it. ;)

Dave...

Is your meter showing the same powers as Glenn's meter? I think he said something about you comparing the two....
