Fireball laser projector mod.

My girlfriend's birthday is in december and I want to buy her one of these and mod a PHR diode into it (and who knows, if it's cool enough I may make another for my self too!), has this been done by anyone on the forum? Is it possible?

things to take into consideration:

does it use the same size diode?
would I need a driver? or should simply replacing the diode with the blu ray diode be fine at such a low current?
will it blend?

its a good idea and i believe its already been done on the forums somewhere. however, this isn't a spirograph, its more just random movements, if you want a spyrograph i suggest the Mighty Mini Laser from Spencer's, which is where you would get this too, or the red one to sound. all it does is the basic movements, the more complex movements cost about $20 less at Spencer's, its weird. or you can buy it for $15 here http://scientificsonline.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_3039843

about the diode, all thats inside is a small open can laser module with a driver that sticks out maybe 1cm past the brass heatsink (picture for comparison next to an LR44 button cell). all you would need to do is replace the module with your blu-ray module on the mount brackets http://s376.photobucket.com/albums/oo209/M_Liberty1992/?action=view&current=PA260003A.jpg here.

[highlight]*edit*[/highlight] ok i see what you want, I don't know the inner workings of the fireball because i dont own one yet, but i would assume since its the same manufacturer that its the same 5mW red module inside both the spyrograph and the laser spaz show

thanks liberty! How easy or hard is it to get the diode out of the brass thing? I cant see it too well in that picture, is it like trying to get a diode out of an Aixiz? or easier than that? Also, how many mA's is it putting out by default (only assuming the fireball puts out the same ammount). I'm not sure if the blu ray would be bright enough or brighter than the 5mW red that's already in there.

Modding that thing is pretty much a MUST! ;D 5mw red don't quite make it in the "laser show" grade lasers category : And you're probably gonna need a new driver if you want power with that blu-ray.

thats actually the back housing to another teeny module i have so there isnt anything in it, it just happens to be the same size, actually the module in the laser is a hair smaller. I have never attempted to take it out because i dont want to mess it up, i dont have a replacement. but if you look at the link i gave for the blu-ray mod it should say there, and like Switch said you will need a new driver, a real driver to power a blu-ray diode. and even the module for the blu-ray, that I have seen is going to be a bit bigger, but it should fit. like i said check out this thread http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1220672544 he put a complete blu-ray module with a driver into a Mighty Laser Mini and it looks great. As for mA im not too good with power but i can tell you the Mighty Mini runs off 3 AAAs, i do not know if the Fireball is AC or battery operated.

If you use a flexdrive off the fireball's laser power input, you will be able to make this work with a bluray. I've done the same thing with the laserone laser show they sell at spencers and it works beautifully. I abandoned the project when I decided I wanted more than one color of laser in the beamshow.

Now if that movie above is truly a fireball, I would say DON'T GO THERE. It's essentially a mirror mounted on a speaker. As the speaker vibrates (oscilates) from the sound it creates a random bounce of the mirror and the laser that is bouncing off said mirror. You can VERY easily recreate the same thing by gluing a mirror to the center of your speaker and bouncing it of that. OOh magically it's SOUND ACTIVATED!!! LOL

lol, yea thats true but he wants the kool fireball plastic case the show comes in

also they have one that isn't sound activated, i think all that is, is a laser on a "random" motor pattern

But it has a microphone and it reacts to whatever ambient sound. Cyparagon said it has some small galvos.The patterns aren't all that exciting.Maybe it's just better to use a spirograph for that.But with a powerful greenie and some fog , the beams from that thing should be awesome in combination to music.
