Hello all. I've got some time off now and decided to try out an idea I had a few weeks back; a laser attachment for a mechanical e-cig.

If anyone is familiar with electronic cigarettes, you know that the standard connector used in rebuildable atomizers is the "510" connector. It's center post is positive with the body being negative. It has screw terminals for building coils on. I had a spare Igo-L atomizer that I wasn't using.

On Ebay, I found this:
405nm 150mW Violet Blue Focusable Laser Dot Module | eBay
A 405nm, advertised 150mw, laser module.

It shipped on the 27th of August and I recieved it today, so shipping was speedy. The quality is a bit better than I expected, but I'm no expert.

I decided to 3D print a housing that would incorporate the laser module and Igo-L lower deck, so that it could be attached to an ecig. The unit I'm attaching this to is a Hades 26650 mod useing a Sony 50A battery, so power isn't an issue at all. The design and print went quickly. The print took about 2 hours to finish, as I was printing 0.2mm layers for better strength and finish.

Everything snapped together fairly easily, some finishing work might be needed on the lower pocket as the Igo-L does not completely recess into the piece as I wanted. For a day project, I'm happy with it though.

The focus on the laser module is a pain, but I did manage to get it focused enough to burn black plastic and paper. It does so fairly quickly. The beam is pretty clean. Obviously, the ABS insulates and won't do any heat sinking, so the duty cycle is limited. I haven't felt it heat up at all, even after the 45s cycle that's recommended.

Anywho, hope y'all enjoyed it. This is my first build post, so constructive criticism is appreciated.

(Sorry for the pic quality. The camera on my Note 2 isn't doing so hot.)

Nice been wanting to do that for a while. It is the 510 connector that I needed to work out. Wanted to make screw on modules people could just attache to their mods. Very nice work.

Thanks!

Yeah, it would be awesome to have something a little more compact, but, beside a few 501 to 901 adapters, the male 510 connector is had to find in a configuration that would be easily adapted to a project.

Once I get around to getting a decent shop set up, the 510 is 7mm x 0.5 thread I believe, so I'd just have to figure out an insulator/center pin arrangement.

You can try printing in alumide although I am not an expert on how that works.

Have a 3d printer just to nervous to fire up lasers with the abs non-heatsink lol
