Is this a good deal, would the output really be 150mW, has anyone had any trouble with this seller? I am somewhat of a laser pointer noob, all I've owned are those <5 mW 635nm lasers. What type of battery would I use with this? I want to get a battery that will push the laser diode's mW output to around 200 mW. So I think the current would need to be around 150 mA (or so the seller says). By the way what would the max mA I could run this thing on supposing I had an amazing anti-heat setup? Can I build a heat sink for this laser, does anyone have any plans to?I also have two 25x25x10mm micro compter fans, could these be used to cool the diode? Are acrylic lenses actually better than glass lenses? I figure on putting this inside a Radioshack project box or possibly a Mini Mag Lite (but no fans).

that is not a bad price but it is not a good price. go to www.hightechdealz.com and look there.
jayrob sells 2 things you are interested in.
1- the heat sink
2- the anti reflective coated glass lens that will let your blu-ray run more powerful

next, do you have electronics and soldering experience. cuz the driver from ebay is a diy. and also battery voltage for that driver wont increase the lasers power. the potentiometer will. lasers run off current, not voltage. well kind of, but that is the simplest way i can explain it.

That price is not very good. It's just a PHR diode. They are usually pushed to output about 100mW. You can find them much cheaper in the buy/sell/trade category on this forum.

Check in the BST section for the parts to build your own. If you have little soldering experience then a Jayrob build with the 'Hot' option will require the least amount of soldering.
 
dont buy the kit, the driver will be too huge to put in anything decently pocket sized.

and i doubt you will get 200mw without the 405-g1 lens mod from jayrob. and fans are not needed. they will only drain batteries, take up space, sound horrible, and blow dust around your components. no one uses fans, its just not practicle. plus a PHR-803T diode "the diode your looking at" will MAX out at about 150Ma with a big heatsinked build such as the MXDL. but that is VERY dangerous as the PHR tends to fail anywhere above 125Ma. but every diode veries slightly. its so hard to say indefinately. just check out the buy/sell/trade section. they have what you need and unbeatable prices. not to mention fast shipping.

also. space your questions out, its hard to pay attention to all of the questions you have if they are one right after another. space them out with a single line, easier for people to disect it that way.

and K1kb0t is right. buy a host from jayrob with the HOT option and the 405-G1 lens mod. that will require the LEAST amount of work on your part, and give you the MOST power out of your laser. and all you will have to do is solder the diode to the driver and put the host together.

the HOT option offers this, Jayrob will solder and PRE-SET your flexdrive V4 driver at the desired current, so you dont have to and risk killing everything.

if you want a REALLY cool blu-ray laser that burns like WHOA go with the "pocket mini" host and the 405-G1 lens mod. you will have almost 200Mw "maybe 165 +/- 10" in a host the size of your pointer finger. its a personal fav of mine. and will burn just fine.

OK, I definitely won't be buying that laser. This jayrob guy seems to be pretty popular. A few days ago I was doing research on lasers on google and it took me to his links on this forum a lot. I am really looking for a strong laser with a beam that can be seen in lighter places. Burning is just a plus. Is there a certain color that is best for seeing the beam? It seems like the beam is very hard to see with blu ray violet lasers. I heard maybe on a dark night with some fog, smoke or dust in the air. Thanks for the helpful responses.
 
it goes like this
first know your budget!!!!!
then
green is the brightest and most visible to our eyes. but any laser is hard to see in areas of light.

red and viloet to me are about the same in visual, both pretty hard to see beam but easy to see it with fog/smoke/vapor. but they are easier to burn with.

violet/blu-ray makes things glow strangely. visually it is the favorite of many members. and known to be the best burner.

try www.o-like.com and check out the 150-200mw green modules. that is a great choice. and you mount it in a project box or a flashlight host.
 
Green is the easiest to see followed by yellow...If you are only looking for visibility I would suggest 100% that you choose a 532nm green pointer. You could get something relitively low powered and be able to see the beam.

Wow, that green is high up there on the chart. I already have a Mini Mag Flash Light so the Jayrob laser is definitely an option I could choose at this point. In response to darkarmyofone, I did find a few portable laser pointers that use fans (they were either from wickedlasers or dragonlasers). Also I didn't realize how much traffic this website gets and that these questions have probably all been answered before. By the way any recommendations on what the lowest mW is that a 532 nm beam could be seen at night. Some of those o-like laser modules are super expensive, like the 300 mW and up.
 
How far would the 532nm 50 mw beam travel at night, supposing I shined it straight up into the sky? How far away could it be seen from? I'm sure members of this forum support laser safety so just putting it out there, I won't shine it at any planes.
 
it will literally touch the clouds above you. and on a clear night, look like you are touching the stars.
 
OK That pretty much ends it. I will definitley be buying a 532 nm instead of the blu ray. I plan to get either an o-like module or a pre-manufactured pointer. I'm surprised no one has complained yet that I'm the wrong forum. Thanks for all the quick help.
 
I think someone mentioned the 50 mW from Ledshoppe.com... I just wanted to say that I recommend it. It is WAY brighter than my 120 mW blu-ray, so yeah. Green is the way to go if you want to see the beam.

I attached a picture taken in my room with no light (with my crappy camera). You can see how when I shine it at the wall it literally lights up my whole room.

I'm pretty new to lasers myself, but I just wanted to throw this out there.


Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the only thing I don't like about it is the "side splash" it gives off. I don't know if my lens is dirty or if they are just made like that.
