Hi All! :D

Just wanting to ask a quick question -

I have recently purchased this diode: 300mW 405nm Violet Laser Diode Module & Glass Lens - eBay Laser Lighting, Lighting, DJ Gear, Lighting, Musical Instruments. (end time 15-Aug-09 21:45:32 AEST)

I need a driver for it, would this work?
104mA constant Current driver 405nm Blue laser diode - eBay Industrial Lasers, Lighting Lasers, Industrial Supply MRO, Business Industrial. (end time 21-Aug-09 16:15:38 AEST)

I want to try and fit all of it into a torch fitting of some sort, hence i want to buy a small driver rather than a larger one - i could make one if someone posted schematics for a small one though?

Also, by defalt would this laser, with that driver, be strong enough to burn through a cd jewel case or the like?

any help would be appreciated! :)

Do a forum search for DDL or daedal driver. This will give you the schematic and tons of implementation info. Welcome to LPF. You can get diodes in our group buy section. Good deals.

Do you know if your diode is a 6x type? (Auction shows as ended...) If it is a PHR, 104mA is safe. If it is a 6x, it can take more current. Note that a bluray diode driven at 104mA will not give 300mW. A PHR at 104mA will go through the black plastic of a CD case.

Sorry Mate,

I don't trust this listing for a moment. In one place it says 300mW in another it says 250mW. Can you get the seller to tell you where the diode came from? What sled and/or bluray burner it was harvested from? After you get it, can you take good close up pictures of the diode back and side to show us?

That driver will work, but you will be getting about 95mW out of the diode at that current.

Peace,
dave

Cheers for the reply guys :)

Dave, I will take pictures then the diode arrives and also ask the seller, and thanks for the advice on the driver, do you know where i could get one which would deliver a higher current?

Thanks again! - I'm new to the world of lasers, and buying anything higher than 5mw is illegal here in aus so im stuck with DIY! lol

You could use a Rkcstr or a flexdrive (See the stickies in the Buy/Sell/Trade board). However, until we know or make an educated guess as to what the diode is, I wouldn't rush into trying to build it. The seller has protected themselves fairly well if the diode fails in your build.

Peace,

ok so postage took ages lol but its finally here, i've asked the seller what sled it was pulled from, am yet to hear back.

here are some pix although i dont think it will say much since its in a module that i cant get it out of..

I am sorry to say that your pics aren't enough to figure out what kind of diode that is.
Based on the current spec he or she gave
Max Current: ~260mA
Lase Threshold: ~31mA
I would guess that it is either a SF-AW fake 6X or a real GGW 6X diode.

I am going to side with Dave though, I don't trust the Ebay posting. It says 300mW, but then on the bottom, he or she says that it puts out 250mW.

If it where me, I would put it at 180mA to 200mA and let it go until it dies. A replacement 6X diode will only cost about $30 to $70 USD....depending on where you buy it.

Good luck and take it slow!!!

If you plan on making a handheld flashlight laser, definatly use a MicroBoost driver. It not only sets the current, but it also boosts battery voltage to a voltage useable by blu-rays (about 4.7 volts for 120mA)
