Does anyone have a fluorescent diamond?

Some diamonds are slightly fluorescent under a blacklight, or any UV actually, which can give them a little extra "pop" in sunlight. Some of them are actually like glow in the dark paint in that they'll keep glowing for a while after they're "charged up".

Since usakicksass posted in the other thread that BR lasers make uranium glass fluoresce, I was wondering if anyone has gotten a chance to try it on a fluorescent diamond and see what happens.

Yes. Mine fluoresce light blue. I think Scopegy20 has some as well.

I have some light blue spinel that fluoresces a cool blood red when I shine my blu-ray laser/UV light on it...a bit of topic, but not that much

Wish I had some spare diamonds like u guys :-/

You would have to define "really bright" for me. It is clearly noticeable. It does not require eye protection.

Also as brtaman opened the topic, many other gemstones fluoresce under the 405nm wavelength. Some of the garnet I have also glow a bright, deep red. Any man-made gemstone that is based in borosilicate will glow.

Hey,

What color garnet do you have daguin, synthetic? My spinel is synthetic, which is why it glows, but now that I have this blu-ray I am happy that it is synthetic hehe wow just noticed...under long-wave UV the spinel glows ruby red, however under shortwave UV a smooth light blue wow was not expecting this.

. I assume you are into minerals/rocks/geology? do you have any fluorescent minerals? I posted in another thread in which you mentioned you were getting some meteorites, but maybe you missed my post? I have a bunch of flourescent minerals I got in a mine in NJ, Franklin mine IIRC?, are you familiar with the mine? I was told it was quite a hot-spot for fluorescent minerals, i have some nice adamite (green), esperite (yellowish) and what i believe to be eucryptite or sodalite (glows a bright red/orange under LUV), the orange fluorescing mineral is active even with blu-ray, not as extreme but quite nice

, maybe you can help me with identification of my mystery orange stone?

How extensive is your mineral collection?

I'm sorry. I did miss your post. I have several kinds of garnet The ones that glow so nicely are rhodenite. I have lots of glowy rocks

In the last raffle, I provided fluorescent collections for three of the six prizes. Franklin, NJ is a world famous location for fluorescent minerals. If you know the location of the unknown and can describe the color it fluoresces, I can probably hazard a guess as to species. Offhand, if the location is Franklin, NJ, I would first guess calcite. It glows VERY nicely under LW UV. The fluorescence of minerals is often overpowered by the "dazzle" of a bright blu-ray laser. Try diffusing the beam or shining it through a diffraction grating to see the more subtle glowing rocks.

I also have a safe full of stuff in the closet, a garage full of stuff outside, and several sheds in the backyard full of rocks.

WOW man nice set of geodes/rocks/minerals

You just dwarfed my already tiny collection [smiley=thumbsup.gif]. do you have any flourite/adamite/esperite/calcite combo stones? My jaw dropped when I saw the display at Franklin Mine, these flourescent minerals just seem to pop when they have that nice contrast.

I've always been fascinated with geodes and I saw something very wierd one of my geodes (well the only one I can find :-/), fluoresces (barelly), in a green jade color, very subtle on the lighter blue part on the edge where the geode shell meets the crystal formation. I am quite rusty/noobish/amateurish in this field and I seem to have lost all my notes (post-its) identifying my stones during a move

I believe that you are on the money with the calcite, now that you mentioned it, it seems to ring a bell, and your description is on the money it is veryy bright under LW UV, I would classify it as a 610-620nm glow. I will try using a diff grating as soon as I get one (in the mail), the blu-ray does over-power but its too cool to let go, all my other lasers are jealous I think.

I have a couple of fluorite/hackamite/calcite specimens from Franklin. I have a slab of the material on the chest of drawers behind me, just to shine my blu-rays on. The geode pictured is a "Coconut" from Chihuahua, Mexico. The green glow is from a uranium salt included with the agate (micro-crystaline quartz) surrounding what looks like smoky amethyst (macro-crystaline quartz). The coconuts from Chihuahua can also have calcite crystals (milky, optically clear, and/or golden) included along with the quartz in them. Several of the ones in my bookshelf do.

There were a couple of fairly extensive threads dealing with fluorescent minerals before the crash. I don't know if they were revived or not.

How many people can say they have a form of uranium lying around the house hehe (uhm no homeland security no wmd's will be manufactured out of it, and as far as I know there is no oil under my house, relax BB ;D).

It would have taken me forever to find out [smiley=thumbsup.gif].

Your specimens from Franklin must be beautiful though...too bad the camera does absolutely no justice to fluorescent minerals (nor lasers for that matter).

lol daguin you remind me of this guy i work with ... he goes on rock hunting field trips all the time and is constantly bringing us new rock in to look at ... he says his wife is trying to get him to move his pile of rocks he keeps in his back yard... (everywhere else is already full)

;D No. I teach human communication (public speaking, argumentation, rhetoric, interpersonal comm, intercultural comm, Oral interpretation, etc.)

Rocks, crystals, and gemstones are just one of my hobbies (as are lasers).

GooeyGus, you have no idea. My stones must be carried with a hand truck

Big collections are cool until you have to move
