I bought these off craigslist and tried to take one apart the diode was a three pin but unremoveable. Sorry for such a newbie question for such an illustrious group. First one we will call the black one.

and then there is the silver one. does it have value as a blu ray diode pointer and what power should I exxpect. it appears to have 5 pins.

The silver one looks like a KES (PS3) sled.  The other looks like some simple reader sled, but I cannot tell from what application.

On the silver one there should be a 5-pin diode in the heat sink that is "screwed down" at the far right of the sled (your left)

In the black one, the diode is centered under the PCB at the bottom of the picture

Diodes are rarely "easy" to remove.  They required some sort of mechanical torque or the breaking of a glue attachment to be removed.

Thank you for your quick response - i was able to break the diode out of the black module it is a 4 pin device appears to be a open can diode of some kind. I assure you it is very dead at this point. If i can get an explanation as to what it is i can re list it on ebay. (I have 7 of these) they will not work for what I want to do. can you suggest a listing price? After reading looks like what i want is a 803 t (i want to build a blu ray pointer) prefer high power.

The 5 pin diode is a lower power ir combined with low power blue from what i can understand from Sams FAQ is this true?

I have seen your a brief history dave...i bow down...

Thank you for your response maxkillz

hahaha i laugh- I called it an open can...well...it used to be a closed can. I can see the can top inside the molded plastic.

;D ;D ;D That's only because you've never seen the monkeys flying out of my butt :D :p

The PS3 (5-pin) diode is good for up to about 25-30mW from the violet part of the diode. You can buy "new" sleds for about $20-$30 and used/surplus/broken sleds for about $5-$8.

As I said, I do not know what the "black" sled is. Try searching "laser sled," "laser pick-up," etc. in eBay and look at the pictures. You may also be able to search up the numbers/letters from the PCB in Google. PSX Boy carries alot of these "repair" sleds. You may find the model there.

Before you buy anything from eBay or anywhere else for your violet (blu-ray) build, look and ask here. There are lots of sources for inexpensive components here

As you have a KES400 why not try building a low power blu ray with it? You will get some practice and that first flood of violet light is a thing to behold!

damn, my back is going to be very sore after bowing down to all you friggin gurus. Rog you are an amazing engineer from what i have seen. I am going to pactice with the kes as suggested. eventually i want to use a drlava ps & load or the rckstr ps. is there one perferred over another. I am trying to lurch as much as possible and avoid asking stupid questions. I have been building lasers for over 30 years and now i am just getting into diode lasers...basically because i am bored.

The Rkcstr is thinner. The flexdrive is shorter. The Rkcstr cannot be trimmed down. The flexdrive can be trimmed down on one dimension. The Rkcstr is a linear driver. It needs 2.5V for itself. The Rkcstr needs at least 6V for reds and 7.5V for violets. The Rkcstr cannot take more than 12V. The flexdrive is a boost/buck driver. The flexdrive needs 2.5V-5.5V The flexdrive cannot take more than 5.5V The Rkcstr converts excess voltage to heat. The flexdrive generates very little heat.

I make the decision of which one to use based on space available, and battery configuration available.

Welcome to LPF, Pat!

I intended on posting some info but it looks like everyone else has it covered

I have a few spare 803t sleds if you want a bit more power, usually around 100mW

i found a parn number on the black one-  here is a link to the description.

http://www.digchip.com/datasheets/parts/datasheet/304/PVR-502W.php

it says one can two wavelength but i can not find any LD information does anyone know what colors this puts out.   It has four pins.  can I use a DVM or a battery to see or try to figure what this LD is?

It is a combination very low powered red and IR in one diode. It is worthless for a pointer. You can get a similar red by buying a "cat toy."

You said you had a few of those PS3 sleds (the silver ones). You might look into selling those here because I would guess a couple people might want to buy those to try a 7 color laser (like rog8811). I ordered one from a random website, but it is used and may not be very good, if that is the case, I would probably want to buy another one.
