A lot of us have seen the strange yellow rectangle on blue rays, I had one amongst my last GB sleds, it was one of 2 unmarked holders....this thread
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1209915374

I decided it was useless for any of my pointers so put it aside...tonight I had a play with it and discovered it has a sweet spot at 80ma where it suddenly brightens dramatically with no sign of the yellow. It levels off almost immediately so I have not taken it any higher.

It burns electrical tape and melts the wax on a red match....not quite lighting it ( this match has been knocking around on my work bench all winter, I will try a fresh-sharpied one tomorrow :))

I discovered something else tonight as well. I had it shining out of the workshop and as I was moving it in the clamp I saw red.... When I shine it, obliquely on a dark green leaf, potato leaves seemed about the best, the dot is distinctly red when viewed from the laser but no sign of red when veiwed looking toward the laser.....I tried to photograph the effect but my camera wouldn't pick it up.

How much of a yellow artifact did it have at the normal current?

Mine have some of that yellow stuff at 33mA, but it's not very much (I think, dont know what to compare it with :().
I'd like to try this, but of course I don't want to kill it!

This one was bad.... at a couple of inches and out of focus, driven at 40ma it had a dim violet bar around 1/4 the size of the square, yellow glow. It has cleaned up perfectly at the 80ma though :)

I have had them in the past where the yellow is just a small annoyance when seen in the dark but otherwise a good beam at lase point +10ma.

It appears like you've got a freak then. ;D God for you!

Mine makes a good beam at 33mA, so I guess that it's normal and can't do any high power tricks. Oh, well. :)
