My blueray pen , went from a good strong beam to this output from the window without a lens... the "image" it projects looks like a old style key almost..

With a lens through "blueblocker type of glasses"

And it used to burn like hell , now it doesnt burn at all..

Anyone know if it's the diode or the driver might be at fault?

Thanks

wait... without a lens? If theres no lens being used in that pict... your diode should be fine, as well as your driver. Stick a lens on it and see what happens! I think you'll be surprised! :p

I edited my first post to include a pic of it with a lens through blueblocker type of glasses to greatly reduce the glare..

Don't quote me on this BUT I know that acrylic lenses degrade over time.....maybe its time has come?

Take a really good look at the diode's aperture, there's a little glass window covering the opening.. I'm willing to bet yours has been broken or knocked loose. You might be able to salvage it by "decanning" the diode, though it's a bit difficult.

the window is fine ,and clean, im just going to replace the diode, hoping that if its the driver it wont kill the new diode too quick..

to me, the driver looks fine, the diode is lasing. the pattern misses quite a lot, simply darker, without being mirrored/shadowed/focussed away. my guess is the diodes coating is burnt up quite much by overpowering it, and that the "rest" will follow in the next few minutes of runtime.. i would replace the diode, but just to be sure measure the current again.. should be fine with measuring with the old diode running (dmm in between one leg of the diode and its old connection from the driver)
