I am making a laser with a blue-ray burning diode in it. The Diode is 350mW and is 405nm. I was wondering what voltage I should use to power it, and then what size resistor. Thanks.

You need to read up a bit. You probably do NOT have a 350mW diode. Also, instead of just a resistor, you need a current limiting driver. Until we know what diode you actually have, we cannot help much.

Can you post a macro shot of the front and back of the diode?

Where did you get it?

Peace,

do you have the model number of the burner you got it out of? btw you need a driver to regulate the CURRENT going to the diode not the voltage.. the diode will suck as much voltage as it needs.

if you give us some more info we can help you out further!

i think I've got the same diode. i bought a driver and some resistors but i'm stuck there. i dont know which resistor to use or how much current to put to the diode. I got my diode from LaserDIY.com. there really isn't much of a description for the item. all it says is 350-400mw 405nm laser diode.

That's the one I was talking about. The one from LaserDIY.com. There really isn't much description on it. I was also thinking about getting the diode driver on the website, but I would need a limiting resistor and I don't know what size I would need.

you need more then a resistor! use the search button and search "flex drive v4" or "rkcstr v3" these are laser drivers! you need to put that in series with your battery pack! you have to read alot more before you start playing around with these diodes!!

please email the owner of that website and ask him for the exact model number of the diode.. then we can point you in the right direction! -Adrian

If you are speaking about item 1101, it's a PHR-803T laser diode ..... 100 / 120 mA max safely.

I tried times ago with one of them, to run it "well heatsinked" at 200mA ..... it worked ..... for approximatively 5 minutes :p

With a lab style heatsink, i runned one 24/7 at 120mA for two weeks, and it's still working ..... in a bare aixiz module, i suggest you to keep it at 100mA, for a long happy life, or 120mA for short cycles operations.

Edit: and yes, as other said, you need also a constant current driver.

You can use one of the ready-to-buy ones, or build one youtrself, in the forum there is a lot of info about them, too ;)

Wait hold on? you spend $75 on a PHR diode? lol you got ripped!

Plus you wont get 350mw out of a PHR

it's not a PHR, that diode is 49.99 on LaserDIY.com. the diode that both of us bought is 74.99 and listed as "350mW -400mW Blue Laser Diode" and nothing more.

Assuming the site's claims are accurate and the diode is capable of outputting 400mW, how much current should i be putting to the diode?

(i do have a driver too so we can get off that topic)

To get that kind of power out of a 405nm diode, it would have had to of come out of an 8X drive, and judging by the fact that they sell PHR's for 50$ and the one you have is only 25$ more, its incredibly unlikely that it will be able to produce its claimed power.

HOWEVER, if you feel that you want to stand by the sellers claims fell free to power it up like an 8X diode. I believe the standard about now is 250-300ma's i believe, best to wait for another members opinion before quoting me on that.

ohhh ok I know what you mean now! well if its out putting 400mW its an 8x BR diode! but they cant be that cheap... I'm guessing its a 6x diode.. can you check something.. does the back of the diode (near the pins) have a green blob? or does it have a small barcode? if you could get some pics that will help (front and back!). If its a 6x like i think.. it can be run at a safe level of 160-180ma.. but you wont get 400mW you might get half if your lucky! I still recommend that you email the owner and get the exact model number off him! if you do that then we can be sure we are giving you the right info!

EDIT: just another thought! reading wat gryphon said.. they sell PHR for $50 this diode could also be a 4x BR diode (they could be selling low priced diodes for a higher price!).. LOL def. not outputting 350-400mW if so!

the diode came in a rerctangular heatsink, it had some orange contacts soldered to the back. after removing the orange things there are the three pins and a tiny black square (barcode possibly?) but nothing green

Uhm, almost all the diodes used in burners have a rectangular holder/heatsink, they differ for shape and details, anyway.

Your one, was looking like these ones, in the details, or different ?

oh... yeah, it looked most like the ones under the "-" in the bottom "O-like"

All these ones are SF-AW210 diodes, you can see them in front, back and side shape.

If it was exactly like these ones, you have a 6X ..... but keep in mind that also if almost all those heatsinks are similars, they differ in details.

A pic was very helpful for try to identify it, but if you have already take away the heatsink and throwed it away, patience, we can only try to guess.

75$ it's no way a 350mW. The best you can get from that diode is 180mW?
