after damaging a diode with loose connections i decided to give it a good send off with full power, or about 600ma, from my bench psu.
it had already stopped lasing from the loose connections so i had nothing to lose.
as it over heated from this extreme current, it glowed violet then it started smoking, then it glowed blue, a totally different shade. then it died!

now how do we get them to lase in this colour......

you need a large dose of godspeed tec cooling and some frog juice from jesus... and a hint of apple from mary....

then if all goes well you will get that blue color CW

405nm hundreds pass through my hands, i keep a few, like a 6*burner diode and a few open cans i've made.
473nm - got a bargain 75mw its the best purchase i've ever made, ever.
473nm I've also got the crystals and cmount 808 to make a blue dpss, but not put it together yet
532nm 150mw hacked from a laser pen, many green crystal sets and a few 50mw modules
650nm 200mw pointer hacks put into axiz modules and a few 150mw modules from china off ebay
808nm Ive got to make an invisible beam weapon from a 2w cmount fast axis diode i have, i'd love to burn the arse of my annoying next door neighbours while they walk down the street.

Thats quite a collection, any pics?

Wait, was it actually lasing? :-? I've heard of temperature effecting wavelength but that just crazy! I think the band gap changes or something like that. :p
I can see us cooling the diodes to get different colors but heating them to get blue
just sounds like a bad idea. :-/

I have a dead-ray diode and I think I'll send mine off too.

he said it was not lasing anymore so he had nothing to loose doing this. I think it's the same effect like over powering a green LED and it becomes yellow, then red. A laser diode is basically a LED with a cavity on top of it which is activated by it's light.

About 405nm.com, it's not nice changing your nick this way, myorath. And about the sig, it sounds too good to be true for an LPF newbie.

OMFG!!! I GOT IT ON TAPE!!!! It WAS (as far as i can tell) lasing but at >600 ma's it turned blue at the very moment it died!

I'd post on youtube but my voice is really annoying (even for me). :p

use virtualdub or something to remove the audio stream

I'm not going to try it for myself. I don't know how toxic the GaN fumes would be. I know for a fact that fumes from ultra-bright blue and green LED dies (GaInP) is vert toxic.

Wikipedia sais "The toxicology of GaN has not been fully investigated. The dust is an irritant to skin, eyes and lungs."
