Hi,
Harvested a BDR-209 sled for the awesome 3.8mm/405nm diode and the cool flat package red. After the pull of the diode i applied it to a diode socket and commenced to test this guy. With outstanding results this one came through with flying colors nice !!! Well we will see how it really performs in a build. As i reached 700mA on the PSU it was very stable so i didi't push my luck :shhh:
Well onto the show and enjoy :thanks:
Rich:)

:gj: Rich, it's always good to see DIY stuff like this, it's too easy for us to just buy parts where the hard part is done for us and we can get lazy.

Hi PI,
Been a long time how the hell are ya buddy..Glad to hear from you once again. Well i had 3 sleds hanging out so i broke one down this morning. They get easier and easier very time you do one down to a science now. I agree it takes a longer amount of time but its satisfying ind the end. Hey and the fat red is cool to play with to . A while back i put one in a modified CO module i hacked up it came out sweet for fun. Things like this give a builder an edge in compiling different techniques in there other builds also.
well nice to hear from you again stick around for a while and thanks for checking out my stuff pal..

Lifetime- those are some great numbers, you definitely got one of the better ones. I have a bunch of sleds on the way that I can't wait to tear down. Out of 12 209 diodes, there's gotta be one good one right? I just wish they didn't take soooo long to get here.

I recently built a 209 set to 550ma in a S4 and I'm getting right under 900mw with a G2 and averages at 860mw. Which leads me to believe I can easily push that diode to 1w but I don't want to risk it since it's already built. I have really been on a mission to have a stable 1w 405 handheld recently and I think that's partly why I went 209 crazy, lol

Hi rich,
I even save those small sheets of copper plate to cut up and use for chip heatsinks

Hi VV ,
they do come in handy and they work great, i save all kinds of stuff to you never know when it comes in handy buddy good show pal.
Rich:)

@Kirk,
i just replied to your post a second ago about your 209's and when i hit the post button it erased all my work. well like i said testing on a PSU saves a lot of cash the 405 1W holy grail hunt is always going to be the cause of deaths to the diode. every diode is different in efficiency so test and go slow and easy rushing a good thing is a recipe for disaster. You say you achieved a little under 900mW's 2 550mA thats great but all aren't going to do the same and some will lets hope for the later. 405nmis a great diode and dangerous and misleading so be careful . wish you well in your endeavors when you get your studs hope to see some pics of the finished builds.

Lifetime- that bites the big one when I'm sending a long post or email, then something happens and its gone. It always seems that the ones I lose are the ones that I either spent alot of time on or are important.

I'm still on the hunt for the 405 holy grail, that's for sure! These 405s definitely are very touchy and man is that 3.8 tiny! I personally think 900mw+ of 405 is good enough for me, the 1w was more of a bragging thing just to say I have one. I'm actually thinking of putting a bunch of 209s in a tight even circle and start messing around with different optics. I have been saving/buying random optics the past couple months in hopes of learning hands on with different lenses/cubes/dichros.

I love the 209, its a terrific burner and at that power level the beam is pretty bright, obviously no where near any other WLs, and for that reason I am very weary when operating, even with safety glasses. I wish there were more higher powered single modes out there. I do have a s06j on the way and cannot wait to mess with that!

Is there a good place to obtain the sleds for cheap?
Are these used or never installed?
I would like a dozen good BDR-209's for a project.

Also has anyone attempted to run these in series?
If so how many can you string.

Red- all the sleds I have been buying are all brand new, I went bid crazy the past two months on the bay but it seems there are no more auctions anymore. But the sleds could be had for $30 from techhood, he also sells extracted ones for $35. Who knows if the extracted ones are new though.

I was very curious about running these in series as well. I see other diodes having no issues in series but haven't came across any projects with running the 209 in series yet.

Running them in series shouldn't be a problem. You need to have about 7 volts of supply per diode you are using, however. As far as the current per diode goes, this is the best way to do multiples.

If they are new, all the same brand and well matched they could be run in series, but we still need to use a ramp up cap in the circuit and make sure there are no spikes, I would hate to blow a dozen all at once.

In time we will see the end of Blu-Ray and DVD all together and I plan to grab up a bunch of factory new diodes, but they won't be making any more except for customers who still want to play disc, everything new will be stored in your flash memory devices and your movie purchase will be a mouse click and a data transfer to your home unit or your smart phone, I suppose disposable flash drives will be an option with a 5 transfer then self blank deal.

Disc copyright is easily bypassed, so as flash gets cheaper it will happen, all the incentive is there.

No, RC. You are thinking of parallel operation of diodes. If the diodes are in series this will make all the diodes draw the correct current no matter what they draw. You could even short out a diode and they would still be okay. See Kirchhoff's rules and applications. The current is set by the driver and will stay matched throughout the whole series.

Never mind, I am thinking voltage regulated, current limited will be fine, but it still needs a ramp up.

Hi Kiek,
Hey it's no bragging here you got a good diode and you ran with it and thats awesome buddy. and i would be interested in seeing that build multiple 405's in a bank with a driver setup . As red says ramp up would be great for these diodes in that configuration hey best of luck with that.
Paul has some great info he's been in the electronics field quite a while so is Red with his ideas he throws the book away and comes out smelling good . All these guys are awesome with input by the way.

Oh i feel your pain when you gather up your thoughts put them in writing and poof there gone crap do over sucks buddy. Oh and be happy with 900mW's of 405 it's an achievement really with these little guys, they have an attitude if you rub them the wrong way LOL !!

And Paul thanks for the compliment on the thread and testing means a lot Pal.

Hey Red existotem has them cheaper then techood if you buy more like i did , Caca is great to deal with pricing and quantity on certain items. And they are new sleds to nice and clean pal.
