Anyone here made a BR laser sight for a gun yet?

Just curious.

While playing with my 90mW BR pen I thought to myself "This would make a very impressive sight." I mean, green? No, too gaudy-in-your-face-assult-style-SWAT-fascists-government-overpriced-toy? Red... too 1981 for me....

Blu-Ray?

Oh yea! And given the fact that it is not DPSS, perhaps the recoil won't bother the LD? Thoughts?

PS - I know that 405nM is getting to the edge of the visible spectrum and that 532nM green is MUCH more visible - but this particular piece that I had in mind for the sight is jet-black and is really designed for use at night. A BR sight would be the cat's @55.

Just wondering who already did it (since someone beat me by a longshot to the single AAA BR pointer...)

Why would you do that? :-? Sure it would be awesome, but practical? It isn't bright, and your eyes have a hard time focusing in on the violet dot....maybe that will bother you somehow.Recoil and temerature wise, it should be better than DPSS.But I guess red is more practical and cheaper.....but yeah, like you said....1981.Where's that blue diode? ::) ::)

Of course they are. I mean, what comes next after a laser sight rest on your forehead?

BANG

Real men use iron sights

As long as we are talking guns.......http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/iraq/laser.htm

Real men use their extremely sharp automatic aiming reflex and do not need to look down the barell or through any kind of sight. ;D

How about a UV sight? That way if you aim at your enemy but he manages to run away before you shoot, it's ok , cause 10 years later.....well you know. :p

Btw, the "cat's @ss" is a good thing? :-?

As I mentioned on the original post - this would be used on a "night gun". Some of you may be gun enthusiasts... and know that there are some guns out there that are just 'night guns'. You know - the all-black matte finishes that don't catch light and give your position accidentally, and at night a BR laser looks just stunning. On an all black Sig P250, I can only imagine how cool that would be.

Of course, for daylight target acquisition BR would be next to useless... for daytime, green. It's well known to be the color that the eye is most sensitive to and is thus the easiest to see in daylight...

but at night... the effect of having a big old blueish purple beam coming your way would be rather intimidating. Mainly because it would be so odd to see. Like when I first saw a green laser sight... I was rather impressed with how intimidating a visible green beam could be, sweeping back-and-forth looking for a place to splat a paintball. Glad it was on the end of a paint ball marker and not a 'live' piece! ;D

Anyway, I was just thinking that a 40-60mW BR would look just incredible on a dark piece of cold, blue steel. Now.. the real quesiton.. "How to power it, on a gun" - most of those laser sights use button cells... I am thinking that in this case, button cells will be useless except for maybe 10 seconds of targeting... I wonder how long one of those little 12V garage door batteries would last... they are the diameter of a AAA, and only about 1" long. A23 if I recall correctly. I know they are 12V, but i don't know how many mAH they are. I'd probably need a super-hybrid Flex Drive to run it. One that is built into a one-off teeny-tiny place.... the real question here is 'how small can we make it?'

This would be going on a handgun... so something the size of a laser pointer is kind of out-of-the-question. The real issue here will be finding a way to power it, while keeping it tiny as not to add significant mass and bulk to the firearm.

Thoughts?

Use a ryan driver to limit the current? Those will work with a 12 volt. You could gut a normal red sight, and build it in there.
