8x speed Blu-Ray burner

i think the 803-t's are low standard 6x and look the same I said i think,I remember reading it on here   and if its on here more than one day and no-one bashes it its the truth - ;D

Originally there was an idea that the PHR diodes were under-spec 6x's, but when you have them side by side they are quite different. For one the beam on the 6x is much 'fuller', not flat like the 803s, and I think the voltage is a bit lower to run them even at high currents.

I wonder if we'll ever see multi watt bluray bars!

It would have a lot of use in imaging. Beam shaping as with IR bars is a PIA but you have LOTS of power to toss to circularize and collimate! Bring it on!

Yeah, at a high current, the forward voltage of a PHR can get close to 6V, maybe even above. I measured one at 5.7V, but the Vf was already dropping from heat. This was at 170mA. Even at "normal" operation it is often above 5V.

The forward voltage of a 6x is usually under 5V at normal operation, and even at 182mA i measured 5.07V.


This means, that even if the 6x can require a little more current to reach the same power as a PHR, it is still more efficient. A 6x can have around 18% efficiency, while the PHRs have 16% or so, but they do vary a lot. I had PHRs with an unusually high efficiency. But the 6x heats up noticably less..

Another interesting thing is, that 6x is much closer to 405nm, while PHRs can vary in wavelength enough to be noticable. I've had a 149mW PHR, that had a brighter beam than a 159mW. And Phenol told me about an experiment he did with his 6x and a PHR. He shined them both through a yellow filter glass, and the 6x was blocked almost completelly, while the PHR beam came through a little..

The cans do look the same, but the die inside is also different.

They run at whatever current you give them.. At a certain current they stop running tho.. This happens somewhere between 225-300mA.. But it could happen much lower. You never know. In a year or so we will know much more about them, just like with 16x reds. For now, it's all risky behavior.


If this is the 105mW Sharp diode (and much of the observed charasteristics fit the datasheet), then it is supposed to be run at up to 150mA if 150mA is required to reach 105mW (depending on efficiency and temperature).

Max pulsed power is 210mW.. We've been running most diodes CW at their pulsed ratings so far.. With this one people were very careful until the PHR appeared. Now some are driving them at 200mA, getting 200-210mW after a plastic lens! This means ~240mW raw output!  

I am running mine at 181.7mA at the moment. It's doing 173mW after a plastic lens, up to 176mW if it's cold.
I would like to raise this to 200mA, and hopefully get 230-240mW with an AR coated glass lens (depending on the efficiency of my 6x).



Oh, and DrLava's graph of the PHR also contains a graph of the 6x.

Before the PHR appeared, i wanted to buy a 6x.. Then, for a while i thought, good thing i didn't buy it! But now i'm happy i did! (Thanks GooeyGus! )

I had PHRs doing a higher power than my 6x.. But they lasted a week.. Even at a lower power it's not much better. I need to do more experiments, and hopefully find a safe power level for them, where they stop dying..


I would almost like to buy another 6x.. But i think i'll wait for the 8x instead..
Untill then i'll just try to find a brighter PHR.

Sweet!! when you get this, can you PLEASE take pictures of the sled and post them? I'm very curious as I'm about to buy one of these as well. I'm guessing it will be the same as the GGW but you never know.

Guys, note that the 6x ggw-h20L that we have been using can write double layer media (where you really need power) at 4x but this '8x' is only rated on the second layer at 2x. Thus, it's not a given that it has a more powerful laser, at all.
