You may have e-mailed me that information...

It seems to 'ring a bell', but I have searched and can't find it now. If you have it, could you please e-mail it to me again?

Otherwise, it's not a problem. I will be able to adjust the lens position with 'trial and error'...

Do you have any pics of it? How's the dot compare to that of the 405-g-1?

Yes, I have very nice pictures. And test comparisons as well...

But since it is Igor's lens, he will introduce the results for this lens after the better mounting with the enlarged 'entry aperture' that I did with the mounting. I will add my pictures and data after Igor presents his final information.

I will be shipping today. (Priority flat rate)

Never mind Igor...

I just finished mounting it.

And i just sent the drawings, but not in time.. Sorry..

I was sure you already had the technical drawings and specs, cos i remember preparing them specifically for you, but it was quite some time ago when we first started talking about the mounting, so they must be burried among old emails.

Anyway, thank you Jay for doing this, you made me very happy with that email! :yh:

I wanted to ask if you tried them yet and instead found an email that you're done.. You really work fast!

Woot! All three today?!? I thought tomorrow at best.. I could have them by the end of next week if i'm really lucky!

I'll email you with what to write on the customs declaration, just in case, altho they are tiny enough not to make any silly customs official too excited..

Otherwise, feel free to post pics of how you mounted them in the optics section.. Did you manage to capture the coating reflections with your camera perhaps? Isn't the red (408nm) coating fascinating? :yh:

As for the results in power increase, i want to test with different diode models, for each model with one diode of a longer wavelength and another of a shorter wavelength, so as to establish the ranges of increase (Min, Max, Average), since we know the increase is not a fixed number but varies with wavelength and beam profile...

But enough about that..
BACK ON TOPIC:

As i mentioned in the 8x Mini GB thread, the last 8x's arrived on Tuesday, and i'm preparing everything for the murder experiment! :yh:

Soon the first 8x diode will become the subject of a ritual sacrifice to the lazor gawds!

May it die a slow and painful death! The emphasis being on SLOW, much more than PAINFUL...

Ok...

Here's the mounting pictures! :)

And yes, the coatings on the other lenses look really cool. I have been testing other lenses as well on this end, and have tried a couple with that same coating. (or look)

Other lens news:

I will soon be offering a 650-G-1 glass lens modification that is the same or better than Meredith's 'optimized for red' lens that they have discontinued. They only sell their new 'broadband' glass lens now...

kewl, I look forward to hearing more results on this lens as well as the 8x's!

These experiments are for power under "laser pointer" conditions, but I'd be interested in an experiment under "scanner" conditions. So constantly changing power (analogue modulation with a FlexDrive) and being left on for a long period (in a huge heatsink of course).

Are you able to setup such an experiment IgorT? And yes, I am able to provide the $170 or whatever for the diode :) (Although if there are other scanner junkies willing to donate to that fund that would be swell).

interesting idea, murudai!
well, if a diode survives long at a constant output, it should be good for that time if its modulated up to this output too? theatre incan lights arent "off" when not used, but get a small voltage, just enough to not let them cool all down. maybe a slight orange glow. maybe it would help to dim the laserdiode the same, just under lasing threshold?
all just ideas, i have no clue if that really would work! :)

Murudai...

If you supply the diode, i can do a cycler experiment at any power, or with any modulation you want...

Modulation with a FlexDrive? FlexDrive or FlexMod?

Whatever it is, if you can supply it, i'd gladly test it.. If you send it in a working condition, i just have to hook it up, either to the Cycler's 3.6V output (if it's the FlexDrive), or through the relay (if your setup needs more voltage) and let it run... The rest is completelly automatic...

Since he said "scanner", that automatically IMPLIES LOWER POWER.... I'd imagine, in a scanner, the diode is powered for either 10-20 minutes at once, when demonstrating it (aka showing off to friends), or even an hour or two, if it's used seriously, never mind professionally, where you can have several hours of continuous use...

It has to be powered at reasonable power levels, simply because hours gather MUCH faster in a scanner, than in a pointer!

If it was supposed to be a professional scanner, i would not guesstimate more than 150-175mW of max power. In a hobby scanner, perhaps 250-300mW.. Of course i can make better guesstimates once the first diode dies...

But i also wanted to suggest it's not completelly turned OFF during the modulation, but just brought down to the lasing threshold when supposed to be off... :yh:

However i am not sure how this FlexDrive modulation works.. Due to the way the FlexDrive works i can't imagine anything in between AFTER the output. The IC might have a DIM pin but that's usually for PWM modulation. I'm slightly confused...

**************

Otherwise, now that it's finally weekend, i had some time to test the diodes.. Just a few more to go, and i can hook the first one up... :yh:

I also set up a double time recorder. One is a counter, that simply displays the number of power-ups it detects.. Since the power-up lasts 1 minute, in the end the counter displays the number of minutes the diode survived...

But just in case there is a power failure, i also connected an actual time recorder circuit, which counts the seconds while the photo transistor is detecting light, and remembers them, even if all power is gone..

I'm not expecting any problems, but a backup never hurts... :yh:

There is one thing i am interested in.. Something only people, who have killed 8x's can answer:
- When an 8x dies, does it still lase at a few mW like the weird "S03's"? Or does it only produce spontaneous emissions?

Just in case, i should adjust the filter in front of the photo transistor, so that it doesn't trigger, if the power is less than a certain amount..

The only failed one returned to me was giving the "normal" LED type light

Peace,

Oh my god!

When did this happen? Did i miss the light saber fight? :undecided:

Did you make this, Bryce?

Where did you get Dave's spelunking photos? Or is this just from the hi-res version of the sig?

I can't stop watching it.

Well I've decided I'm going to use a 6X in my scanner build, due to the various costs, risks of modulation screwing it up and what not. But I'm still interested in an 8X going through some tests, so what I might do is start a thread in the scanner section and see how people are willing to donate for a 8X diode for testing.

In fact, it might be a good idea to test a 6X as well under scanner conditions... maybe I'll set up a 'diode under scanner conditions' fund, lol. (EDIT: And then he did http://laserpointerforums.com/f47/diodes-under-scanning-conditions-test-fund-45018.html)

Modulation with a FlexDrive? FlexDrive or FlexMod?

Sorry, I meant FlexMod :)

he he, I wish I made it. Niko did a great job, it's hilarious!
