I don't have a laser power meter. How could I test this? (I heard that certain members of the forums would be willing to test it for me if I paid for shipping, but I would want to send it to a respectable member so that they didn't just get a free laser.)

I'll be willing. I do this all the time anyway and I've developed a robust algorithm for finding the recommended maximum current. I'm in Europe though.

^There is a graph by Lava on here somewhere, titled probably something like "Blu-Ray Laser Diode Round-up". But that is still just a guesstimate.
Not to brag about my own graphs, but drlava's graph is just one diode. To get a general idea of what these diodes do, look at IgorT's batch testing, or mine: http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1214268330/60

how do you find the exact current of a built laser with a meter?
Increase the current with small steps, and draw a graph while doing it. If the graph shows any indication of a 'knee', stop right there. For a more numerical approach, in my 'algorithm' I also draw the graph of P(n)/I(n)-P(n-1)/I(n-1), and when that number drops below zero, stop there.

Thank you Zom-B! That was just what I was looking for. The average on your graph seems to be about 105mW for 120mA. What lens is this using? If not Aixiz acrylic, what would the power drop be for an Aixiz acrylic?

I use AixiZ acrylic, because that is what people use 90% of the time. My graphs represent the mainstream. On some (possibly lost) threads on the forum, glass lenses and Meredith housings are compared. Default AixiZ glass lens is coated for red and will actually lower the power of a blu-ray. Someone on this forum is making custom glass lenses that fit Aixiz and are coated for blu-ray, although I personally think they're too expensive. Meredith adds 10-20mW if an acrylic lens. I don't know about Meredith glass.

IgorT, pullbangdead and me have just discovered that some PHR diodes that seem weak at first glance are actually super powerful. And I'm almost believing that the weaker they seem, the more powerful they turn out.

That is a crazy thread. I would have NEVER believed that 803T diodes could be over twice as powerful as originally thought. If it were the same for long open cans, people would be building 1/2 watt portable reds!
