I just ordered a Merideth LDC-2 ..  I have to try this.

DrLava's graph and mine were very close on the first tests.  I think we were using similar modules.

Mike

Mike, I am very much looking forward to your test results. I hope you also ordered a 5.6mm adapter because you will need it to mount the LD.

I have had some focussing issues with some of the Meredith modules. It's not too difficult to fix though. It is important to fix one of the problems BEFORE you mount the LD into the 5.6mm adapter. Here's a link to my 'Heatsink Tips' document. Take a good look at my tips on the Meredith modules at the lower right hand side of the document. There are a couple of things to take note of there. Please let me know the results of your findings!

Awesome work!!!

I plan on joining the club here soon, maybe 3 or 4 months. Should I send my membership fees now? ;D

Since it was drlava and Hemlock Mike who first showed this 6 X harvest, I must humbly refuse to accept any of the club fees for myself. All future club fees should go to the two founders. Ha ha! As a reminder, the pin connection is different with these diodes:

I'll be joinging the club this week as well, but alas my membership fees are going straight to Fry's electonics...

By the way, the host that I'm using is 6x AAA Dorcy flashlight that I got at Target that looks like it will be a great match for the blu-ray. The batteries are placed in the flashlight via a special adapter that puts the batteries in a 3 x 2 series - parallel configuration that outputs 4.5 volts, but it is super easy to change it to 6 x 1 series configuration for 9 volts. Another good thing about this host is that the electrical connections are isolated from the body, so it can be either cose-positive, case-negative, or floating case.

Sounds like an interesting host! Looking forward to seeing pictures and details of your build. So far, I believe there are only 4 members of the 6 X club. A small, but distinguished group…

Re: The 6 X Blu-Ray Club - 130mW's... Schweet!

An interesting side note about the 16.7mW PS3 build... This was my measurement using a Meredith acrylic lens @ 38mA's. For the beam pictures in the first post of this thread, it has a Meredith glass lens installed. The measurement with the Meredith glass lens is 23.2mW's! This is quite a difference. With both my PS3 blu-ray, as well as the new 6 X build, by switching to the Meredith glass lens, I have gotten a 30% increase in power. Or, multiply the acrylic lens reading by a factor of ( X 1.3 )...
Jay

P.S. For the open can reds at 420mA's. The increase is about 20%.

So they make custom glass lenses that just screw into the housing and replace the one it comes with? Where can I buy them?

And brilliant pictures there. Its probably very bright on dark nights.

Re: The 6 X Blu-Ray Club - 130mW's... Schweet!

It depends on which glass lens you want to buy, you can get the aixiz glass lenses here.
And here are the meredith ones. (I think you have to buy the entire module, but I'm not sure as I haven't bought from them)

The meredith glass lenses appear to be better quality than the aixiz ones, with the aixiz glass lenses jay got only 1 extra mW compared to an acrylic lens when using an open can diode. But amk got 47 extra mW with the same setup. So it seems that there a some bad aixiz glass lenses. :(

EDIT: You also have to buy this adapter to use regular 5.6 mm diodes with the meredith modules.

Re: The 6 X Blu-Ray Club - 130mW's... Schweet!

I even tried a second AixiZ glass lens. The second one gave me 8mW's more power with an open can red @ 420mA's. I have not asked amk, but it may be that he did his comparison with an AixiZ acrylic that did not have the black plastic removed from the back of the lens. That would make sense. My comparisons were done with the black plastic removed.

The Meredith lenses are very expensive, but very consistent. The increase in power that I have seen between the Meredith acrylic (or AixiZ acrylic with black plastic removed), and the Meredith glass is as follows:

Red open can build at 420mA's - About 20%
Blu-ray builds (both at 38mA's as well as 100mA's - 30%

I am looking forward to Hemlock Mike's findings. He is going to test a Meredith glass lens on his 6 X blu-ray...

Ok, have you done a comparison between an aixiz acrylic with its back opened and a normal acrylic lens?

Not on the same diode, but I have built several (over 10) open can builds at 420mA's and the AixiZ acrylic lenses (with black plastic cut away), measure out at about the same power as the Meredith acrylic builds. Right around 247mW's. Give or take a few mW's. I have gotten very consistent readings with these builds. I believe there is more variation in each individual LD, than there is between the two acrylic lenses mentioned...

I meant an aixiz acrylic lens with the plastic cut away and another aixiz acrylic lens without the plastic cut away. (sorry, I guess I didn't explain myself very well in my other post)

chido, I have never built a laser without cutting away the black plastic on the back of the AixiZ acrylic lens. But since you asked, I just did a comparison between an AixiZ acrylic with the black plastic cut away, and one without the plastic cut away.
The only thing is, I don't have a 420mA, open can build with the AixiZ housing at this time, so I used my Sony/Senkat build. Which is set at 294mA's.

At 294mA's, using a Sony/Senkat diode, the reading with an AixiZ acrylic lens without the black plastic cut away... 187mW's.

Swapped lenses and measured with an AixiZ acrylic lens with the black plastic cut away... 208mW's.

A difference of 21mW's!

I will bet that if you did the same comparison at 420mA's and an open can, the difference would be greater...

By not cutting the plastic, there is some risk of smoking a little of the plastic. Not good.

Re: The 6 X Blu-Ray Club - 130mW's... Schweet!

Yes I'm aware of that but I just wanted to know the difference since jay said he wasn't suer if amk had cut the back of his aixiz acrylic lens which would explain why he got an extra 47mW out of the aixiz glass lens.

Thanks jay for taking the time to test this. :)
