Measure the output like DTR shows as you slowly make the same jump up in mA to the diode and what will happen is the output will not jump up as high and will keep increasing less and less until it either blows or starts to go down. You need to have a good heat-sink on it though and it is a good idea to stop at some points and let it cool down before continuing. It's not hard to do. Just write down the mA and mW each time you make a change. You could also graph it out for a much easier visual on what is happening.
Got my 10A power supply the other day so now I have a 5A and a 10A for when I need it.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention I built a bdr-209 into a purple host like that a couple weeks ago. I would suggest a G lens when you can afford it as a 3 element isn't necessary on that build and you will get a significant output jump
Do you have c-mount housings/heat-sinks?
