<5 mw 405nm ???

Hello all,

I just purchased a little toy just to satisfy my hunger with out breaking the bank. It's a <5MW 405NM. Nothing special, but I was in the bathroom with the lights off and I noticed when I hold the pen real close to the wall paper.......... it leaves glowing tracer?? Its not my eyeballs getting seeing an illusion either. I closed my eyes till I turned it off and it was still there. Can anyone maybe tell me what phenomenon is happening??

Either you have ingested a drug named LSD, or you shouldn't be holding any laser real close to a wall and looking at it... Either one could be the answer..
405 is UV, and flouresces on certain objects

I was holding it so close there was no scattered light. I could not see the beam at all. Ummmm.... I don't know no drugs lol. I will try for a pic, but fluorescent or not there should not be any glowing after the thing is off!!!............Right??

there should be after glow if your wall paper or paint is made with certain materials and/or pigments

ps.. i tried in my room last night. i have burgundy paint. and i see a trail after i sweep my 405 across it quickly.

Okay cool at least I am not alone...... does anyone have the answer for what it is or why it does it??

GUESS it is the same result with looking at the sun. We may feel lots of dots flaming ahead after we look at the sun for a while. The laser beam can cause the same result... however, a 5mw laser can not do harm to your eyes. do not worry.
Besides, the higher of the power, the more giddiness you will feel...

Uh.. We're not talking about shining it in in your eyes. We're talking about common materials having mild GID properties.

Those wint-o-green lifesavers will give off their own light when crushed, just try chewing them up in the dark in front of a mirror. The phenomenon is called triboluminescence. As for the various materials in the home that react to UV, have you tried your liquid laundry detergent? Most will fluoresce from the optical brighteners that are used to make our clothes look brighter in the sun. Many items in the household contain various amounts of Titanium Dioxide which does glow under UV illumination and does have a short afterglow when illumination is removed.
