441mw - 8X Panasonic #SW-5584 BR

Just finished some power testing on my first 8X...
with the new brass machined Hi-Power lens assembly.

Here is some of the preliminary data:

I (ma) Power(mw) Voltage
40 . . . . . 9 . . . . . 3.7
50 . . . . . 14 . . . . 3.8
60 . . . . . 28 . . . . 3.9
70 . . . . . 42 . . . . 4.0
80 . . . . . 60 . . . . 4.15
90 . . . . . 75 . . . . 4.3
100 . . . . 85 . . . . 4.4
110 . . . . 103 . . . . 4.5
120 . . . . 117 . . . . 4.6
140 . . . . 148 . . . . 4.7
170 . . . . 194 . . . . 4.9
190 . . . . 212 . . . . 5.0
200 . . . . 233 . . . . 5.05
220 . . . . 258 . . . . 5.1
240 . . . . 286 . . . . 5.2
260 . . . . 318 . . . . 5.3
280 . . . . 344 . . . . 5.4
300 . . . . 376 . . . . 5.45
330 . . . . 410 . . . . 5.5
350 . . . . 441 . . . . 5.6 > > 1.96 Watts total - ~0.5 Watt Light = 1.46 Watts Heat

I liked the relatively low voltage on this diode. This means it is more efficient & should make it easier to drive.

Power was fairly good. About 22.5% efficiency

I calibrated my Scientech LPM before the test, so it should be fairly accurate.

The diode came out of a Buffalo 8X, which is actually a Panasonic SW-5584 drive.

I will do some playing with it tomorrow.

This drive was one of two, that MISTERWILLING obtained to further 8X testing.

Looks amazing, but the current readings are not real right?

Just strange that they are all round numbers

Ummm...why wouldn't you set current at round numbers for your measurements?

When doing tests like this, you set your current, then measure the power and voltage at that current, so it only makes sense to use nice, round numbers for current.

wow

Wonderfull Larry thanks for all your hard work on this I certinly appreaceate it.
cudos dude !

Pyro... :eg:

LarryDFW: The P.O. of your diode looks very similar to the Hemlock Mike one... (see updated graph in the Tutorial, Helps & repair Thread)...:)

What are the host and the driver you have used?

No Host

The diode was mounted in a heavy heatsink for testing purposes, no host yet. I wanted to test Power Output of diode before I put it in a host.
I asked Larry to limit current to 350mA because that's the highest output I could get it up on my DDL driver. I trust Larry to take care of this diode but I haven't seen any tests on this diode. I'm not rich so I can't afford to blow one of these before I get to have fun with it. I may ask to test at higher powers when the price goes down for 8x diodes.
I was going to run this diode at 300mA in my host (for longevity) but after seeing these test results, I can't miss out on that extra 65mW of power so I think I will have to run it at 350mA. Besides I have another 8x diode sitting in a drawer right now in case I blow this one.
Also after seeing these test results I am going to continue my work on a glass lens mod for o-like green modules, as soon as I get is ready I will see what kind of power increase we can get.

thats pretty cool seeing these number for me, because it shows where the LD starts to get more and more efficient. In this case the mw surpasses the ma somewhere between 120-140.

Yeah

Its fun to stick the 8x beam next to a phr beam (for comparison) and crank the pot up. It just keeps getting brighter and brighter, 441mW explains why it burned the heck out of me even when i glanced the beam with my finger. I will have to make a larger focus ring when I put it in a host, I don't want to burn my finger tips, just everything else (and I plan to do just that). Larger focus ring diameter should also help with more persice focusing.

You should try and find a Kryton host for that baby - Jayrob makes a really nice focusing adapter that keeps your fingers outta the way, and as a host, the Kryton just point blank can't be beat for quality and heatsinking!

MISTERWILLING is an experienced CNC machinist.

His machining ability means that he is capable of advanced hosts & focusing rings.

This one item he did on contract, for my Hi-Power lens assemblies:
lensnutbr.jpg

Notice the breakedge on the inner lens bore of the brass lens nut.
The threads are Class 3A.

Franco - I am working on a new driver designed for Hi-Power BR diodes.
It will have a lower drop-out voltage & work with 2 rechargable lithium-ion batteries.
It can drive this 8X and future diodes.

P.S. My current-contolled power supply was adjusted to each of those current levels.
Then the power was recorded at the meter.

Thanks for adding the tests to the graph.

The BR diode should referenced to a Panasonic #SW-5584 Drive (also private labeled by Buffalo).

The driver is a low-voltage drop design of mine.

Thanks;

Larry ---
It's hard to believe how close our readings are on these 8x. I used round current adjustments too :-) I stopped at 365 mA getting 477 mW.

Mike;

When plotted on the graph....,

they are almost identical.

Are there any information graphs on life yet? How long have you run it for total at high currents?

This 8X diode probably has less than 60 minutes of run time.

MISTERWILLING has another just like it, that he is putting into a host.

That one should accumulate some run time at that point.

I don't have the plotted line for mine, but looking at the 375mW's @ 292mA's mark, the three of ours are all about the same...

Yours, mine, and Larry's.
