405nm 150mW BLU-RAY ???

Im building a laser with a 405nm 150mW Blu-Ray laser diode and a driver with a 2.25V threshold and an adjustable current range of 30mA to 440mA. The recommended current is around 100mA and the recommended voltage is around 4V. My question is, would three CR123 lithium batteries and maybe a 6 or 7 volt zener diode in line be a good idea and also with the aixiz 12x30mm housing, is there any kind of flashlight that would make a good housing for the whole laser? Maybe a re-worked mini-maglite?

Hi, and welcome to the forum

Looks like you already know what most of the parts are, and what they do.

Firstly, a single Zener won't do as a driver. There's a lot more to choosing a driver, and you need to take your power supply into consideration too.

The Build Guide (there's a link in my signature) contains most of the info you need to get you started on the right track.

Enjoy your stay on LPF!

he already has a rckster driver, i think he just wants to lower the voltage of the power supply

2 cr123a's would probably be enough voltage for the driver and bluray, though 3 with a zener diode could work if the diode dropped the voltage below 11 volts (the maximum for the rckster). also realise that this diode isnt really 150mw like ebay sellers say, its actually about 100mw (not sure if you got this from ebay or not).

In that case, a Zener wouldn't be enough. Three CR123As are excessive.

If you use two CR123As you shouldn't need to lower hte voltage by any amount. Even with three it should be fine- Rckstr drivers are known to run fine from 9V batteries.

First of all, thanks for all the info!!! The driver I'm using is a "Micro-Drive V3 adjustable driver."/rkstr. Unless you guys know of a better one. Its max rating is up to 15V. I was wondering if I use two or three CR123 batteries and put the zener in line with the laser diode itself, if that would actually give me longer battery life plus Laser life? But seriously if theres a better driver, I would like to check it out. Two CR123 batteries should be plenty, I was just curious about three.

2 cr123's will not be enough to power a blu-ray with a rkcstr... cr123's are non rechargeable 3v batts.

The rckstr is already constant current, so you don't need anything in line with it.

A laser diode is like a normal diode, not a light bulb. It has a voltage drop across it, as opposed to a voltage requirement. Feed it too much voltage, and the unused remainder simply bleeds through.

Does anyone know what driver and or the specs of the driver that comes with the standard Aixiz mods?

^^^ correct. but from my experience wording for diode lasers and dpss lasers can differ. when speaking of "modules" for diode lasers it can be with and with out driver. where i as i have noticed that when speaking of dpss modules a driver is always a part of the equation.

^ Mostly correct from what I've seen Chip. My understanding is that the modules that contain red diodes, and are described as, "Red laser modules", that I have seen also always come with a driver, (unless they are just a pressed diode but these are usually obvious). However, they are usually nowhere near capable of powering the high output diodes preferred here and will not be rated for Bluray diodes.

@ SNAKExBITE - Do you have a link to the particular module you mean?

Just got my aixiz mods in! Can someone tell me how to break it down before I go twisting on it and possibly break it. Are they normal threaded or reversed? All info appreciated!

Normal threads throughout.

Some people leave the lens assembly screwed all the way in whilst pressing a diode but I personally remove the nes and spring and then press the diode in.

If you're pressing in a bluray diode, (as I think you are), try and make sure you press it beyong flush. Only pressing it flush can present problems focusing as the lens is more difficult to get close enough to the diode. The diode case is 5.6mm in outside diameter so something smaller than that, but large enough to go over the pins will work. There are a number of things people have found for a couple of bucks that work. Bicycle brake adjusters; airline nipples; and the like. There is a thread but I can't recall what it's called. Maybe do a search for, "Cheap Diode Press Tool". If I find it I'll post it but have a look.

[EDIT: Here it is - http://laserpointerforums.com/f44/inexepnsive-diode-press-tool-52960.html]]

It's not so important to press beyond flush with reds however but is always, 'best practice'.

Should I be concerned about the two little circuit boards between the pins and diode?
