Preferable, but beggars can't be choosers. If you are looking for raw power, a lot of times that means multi-mode.

For example, I have a ~200mW single mode that RHD built. It is one of, if not the, highest power single mode 445 I know of right now.

But if you go multi-mode you can do > 2 watts.

Remember that "500mW" of multi-mode as per the spec sheet, is not the same as "500mW" of single-mode as per our actual usage.

We generally don't know exactly which diodes we're harvesting, but our single mode 405s that do 500mW are probably rated for much less.

If they're advertising 500mW of multimode, then they can possibly hit 1W or more.

Heh, yeah, 1 watt of 405 nm would be nice. Though I'm with you RHD, why would they need multimode 405 nm diodes for...?

Opnext introduced the HL40023MG, a high power 404nm, 500mW violet laser diode for biomedical illumination applications, as well as direct imaging on PCB manufacturing surfaces.

The HL40023MG violet laser diode offers manufacturers the option to use a high power diode in a small 5.6mm package. With a typical operating current of 390mA, the HL40023MG provides 400mW of optical output power.
