Well 6 more for a possibility of a slightly better performing diode: seems like it is well worth it. What's so hard in extracting diodes from sleds? It's not that complicated :)

Plus you get the red diode too, unless you're buying the entire S06J sled.

and you get the internal optics which might be used in some fancy project :D


My thoughts exactly... for you DIYers. Anyways just thought I'd mention, that's a great buy.

I am going to make a laser out of one of these soon. Just waiting for my aixiz laser housing and heat sink. :D

Are these drives labeled as being BDXL capable? If so, that may explain the output power.
Remember that a standard BD-R 12X can write up to ~50GB per disk at present time. Double layer.
BDXL is at least quad layer capable. They're going to 150-200GB disk for 2K and 4K content. Rumor at Sony is +250GB per disk by 2014.
I am suspect of the claim as digital content is rapidly replacing the BD drive.
Through some sources over here, BDXL is supposed to be using a higher power laser for quicker write times.
Very interesting results either way.

Since Seoul opened up the topic again.... Nobody ever responded to lequack. The diodes clearly have different bar codes.

Yup, after seeing the model posted, these are
the BDXL drives LG electronics mentioned contained
a stronger laser diode
As mentioned before NICHIA has a Multimode 1.2w
405nm out already in a 9mm package. Not BDXL ...
But...
Also reading more into the BDXL format history,
this next gen disk is apparently got boost from a partnership of Sony
and Sumitomo electric corp research div.

just saw a new vid by angelos on you tube. it featured a 3.8 405nm diode that performed better than the 12x diodes.

I got a tiny bit more info from a contact locally.
According to him, Sony is indeed the force behind
4x and 8x BDXL drive laser diodes in the 3.8mm
compact size. These diodes are made to take some
very high temperatures and extreme stress that would have
Otherwise caused failure in the previous generation
of 405nm LD. SLD3237VF is rated for 400mW at temps 0-90c
with an eff of 1.6mW/mA. This explains why we're seeing
Extremely good ratio of input vs output power.
Also to point out that the rating of 400mW is pulsed power.

This does sound like the diodes we're seeing with higher efficiency

Due to the nature of LD for data technology,
like any big competitive industry, pinning down the manufacture
of LD from same modle of BDXL drive is unreliable.
Sources are always changing.
More testing need to be done!

That is good news. The 12x 405nm diodes are the topguns for few years now. It is time for a successor. The new diode are introduced in the 3.8mm format. It looks like this going to happen more with the newer diodes.

I´m in love with this new 3.8mm 405nm lazeerer showed.

He also told they´re appear to have an even better beam (less wide) than the 12x we know.

Indeed the 14x only refers to the burning of 2x layer media. 50GB.
The actual write of the BDXL media is 8X and uses the same 400mW rated Sony diode.
Same diode in the Pioneer drives. I'm 100% certain of this now!

So since I have my 14x blu-ray diode running at 0.498 A ~ 750mw, does that mean I am pushing it too hard? I have a heatsink on it as well.

TO be Clear to anyone that thinks that the diode i tested was Sony they are not sony branded ones.:) The diodes i got are not in the open market as in avalible in a click and buy store.

Also my diodes are NOT Pulls. They are brand New diodes awillis2589.:cool:

Further more anyone interested in those Sony's i have tested them Fully. It would be cool to get more info on them from more testers :) but There is Nothing special about them. They are Nothing more then a 12x like diode. "Keyword is Like here" Ive tested both the 5.6mm and the 3.8mm VF and VFR way back when they first came out. I never said anything because they where not Worth the extra money and still are not IMO. THough i did talk about them some time ago in a thread.:)


There is a few different diodes that makes high power 405nm in both 3.8mm and or 5.6mm. As in different companies different diodes and NO you cannot tell from the back of the diode which are which like with 445nm diodes. Even with 445nm diodes you cant tell the class just that it came from a certain Projector. You cant tell the bin. Same goes for 405nm diodes For example the Sony's can be bought both with marking and No marking at all on the back. So really there is No way in telling unless you trust where you are getting them from or get them new. Or futher more tested enough to know the performance and diffrence.

I also have a high power 405nm diode that is smaller then 3.8mm size that does >500mW in power which is unreleased yet and have no info on yet. Video is on its way.............

The Sony's Led Very easy and dont like to see higher then 500mA. Another vet also tested them besides me. They where known to LED on start up every time if they dint like the currant. Which was usually at >400mA. These Sony Diodes are WMore then 6 months old. "The 37's"

These are all 12x "like" diodes. 2 of which have similar marking and very hard to tell apart unless you get them brand new. Even the ones i have are in this same class of 12x's however out of all the 3.8mm ones i tested these resent ones i posted perform better of the 3. Way better then the sonys.IMO The Sonys Maxed out very low.


THe link awillis2589 posted is a little to low in price and i think those contain the earlier first version diodes aka the very first model diodes they came out with which i think are the 36's but i cant be certain.

If you want a diode that is going to put out >1W in 405nm then get the new multi mode 405nm diodes. I can get those but not cheaper then that other guy sells them.:) So go get them from him.:)

Just remember guys if the price seems to good to be true it usually is.
Remember what happened with the Fake 12x... :undecided: There is many Models other then the 3 that are know to be powerful that iam talking about above that can be used in place and still perform decent. So know what your buying. There is over 10 diffrent 12x like diodes but only a few perform the highest. The 37 are not one of them. Also Not all Sony burners use Sony diodes. Thats nothing new but just a reminder.:)

I am fully aware that Sony and other big manufacturers source
components when they need to.
So the data regarding 1.6mW/mA applies to these diodes?
If the diode you're testing isn't available yet
then nothing to get excited over

Junktronix said something over on PL.:) He has them in a low QT. He pulled them from a High end Projection system IIRC.

You can buy them in there mounts or i think bare too.

I think there was a thread over here too someone that posted about it.


Seoul_lasers@ The diodes i have are available.:) A few have ordered already with me.:) There is not a model number for the diodes other then what they refer to them as SXJ8. I cant find anything on them.

But if you want to get the 37's to try out check out ebay. There around 50$ or so.:) They have both the 3.8mm ones and 5.6mm ones on there.

The Sony diodes were tested 6 or so months ago by a few members here on LPF. They are more expensive to buy and the S06J where out performing them by at least 200mW respectively. So it was never talked about more unfortunately..

This thread so happenly came back up after i posted my video on YT.

Sorry for the confusion. Thats why i wanted to be clear to say they where not the Sony's as i seen you where talking about them.:)
