Hey guys,

I was wondering with the 12X S06J Blu-ray diodes, do they heat up as much as an A/M140 at the same current?

ie.
Driver @ 500mA w/ M140
give off same heat as?
Driver @ 500mA w/ S06J

Or, does the S06J give off much more heat at 500mA because it's max current is only around 500mA while the M140's max current is around 1.8A?

I ask because I want to build a CR2 Keychain host with an S06J diode at 537mA (ben boost) and was wondering if there will be adequate heatsinking.

Any thoughts?
Ryan

The formula for heat production is:
Voltage in x Current in - Light power out.

So, a 12x @ 500mA you're looking at around:
(6.2V x 0.5A) - 0.7W out = 2.4W Heat

The Vf of a M140 is less so the heat is less for an M140.

Oh that's how you calculate heat production. Thanks!

*edit*: oh btw where did you find that diode voltage data? I can't find it in the diode compilation thread.

The VF actually increases with the current you feed the diode. My 4.5V figure is kind of a central mark along the plot for a PHR diode. Going over slightly never hurts anything in this application, so it is safe to use for a 445nm diode as well, but those vary even more due to the larger current range. All I can say for sure is that there IS some data SOMEWHERE that suggests the 12x diodes cana ctually have Vf's of >4.7V at high enough currents. Most of us don't run these diodes past 0.5A though.

Man, I didn't think the Vf shot up so much! Holy cow, I was way off.

I see why now... 4.5V is only valid for the PHR series... no wonder. I didn't think the Vf changed so much between them.

As per the OP; formula still stands =). But this of course means a 12x will run hotter per mA than a M140.

Btw, ty Piferal!

Yes, the 405nm laser diodes usually have an Operating voltage "recommended by the manufacturer" rather high,
and we know that we always like push this babys near the limit :eg: which means that the voltages can be overcome this, naturally already high.

To give just 2 examples, the sony 405nm 200mW has an operating voltage of 5.0V

And the laser diode from Opnext of 405nm and 500mW, has an operating voltage of 5.5V :eg:

And these are just normal operating voltages, and we know that we like to push them, then you can reach voltages of 6V quietly.

Good find, I didn't even know that Opnext had a 405.

I wonder if anyone on the forum has tried to source one? (Beyond paying whatever ridiculous price I'm sure Thorlabs marks it up to)

So funny, I just stumbled onto this one a few minutes ago and then did a search, this is the only thread it is in right now.

It is multimode, but it still would be nice if we could get some more power out of a 405nm for beams anyway.

It is mentioned here as well...

Opnext Laser Diodes: Violet, Blue, Red, and Infrared

Introducing our new 445nm 80mW single transverse mode blue laser diode, the HL45023TG is ideal as the blue light source for RGB laser pico projectors.

The 404nm, 500mW multi transverse mode violet laser diode, the HL40023MG is suitable for direct imaging for printed circuit boards and medical analysis equipment.

EDIT: I wonder if one of the Chinese partners might be willing to sell these diodes? I know a lot of the diode makers don't like for their diodes to fall into hobbyist hands, but the Chinese seem to have less concern for silly "rules?"
