I'm getting anxious to splurge on a BDR-205!!! Seeing these kinds of numbers is amazing! I have found that usually in a pen style build the pen becomes the heatsink... lol That won't bother me much once I start building mine as my duty cycles are always very short - usually no more than 20 seconds on at the longest. Does anyone know if a v5 flexdrive will handle these diodes ok at 400mA???

I like a laser that can be left on, I like to do optical experiments and light shows. But hey that's just me.

We are pushing the flexdrive PAST its rated ability. Many are doing it now, but some are finding instability. Some diodes pull more voltage than other diodes. If yours is one that pulls higher voltage, you may have problems

This is an observation about this diode which I can only post here.

When I have stable output at 500 mA, I get 724 mW. I turn the current control to zero and walk away. Later, when it is cool, I turn the current control back up but get only 420 mA @ 6 volts. The current starts increasing back to 500 as it warms.

Have any experimenters found this "warm up" period? I've seen it every time I go from 0 mA to high current.
Please don't post useless fluff unless you are or have tested one of these.

OOPS -- I'm in the wrong place with this. I wasn't posting about drivers here.

I need to bite the bullet and set one up in a lab style heat sink

I'm only trying to get data on a diode only here.
What people do with a labbie builds comes later.
A larger heat sink when cool may prolong the warm-up characteristic
I observe over a couple minutes. Might be interesting.

HMike

This is the first time I have observed a "warm-up" on a laser diode. Very few of us have tested these 12X diodes and I've never seen anything like this.

I have not observed any "warm-up" with the diode hooked to a DDL in a heat sink.

Finally finished my sterling silver host, with a 12x diode from the BDR-205bk. I got the flexdrive preset to 380ma and I took care to avoid even touching the pot in any way. I'm really impressed at how fast it burns even focused to infinity!! I've not yet tried any focused to a pinpoint burning yet.

Having depleted my spare cash reserves, I think a LPM for me will have to wait a while. In the mean time I might have to find someone to ship the laser to who can take a power reading on it for me, as well as take a beam shot or two. I'll post some pics of the finished build tomorrow or the next day, but I can't exactly smoke up the photo tent at my work, then turn it on and watch things fry while I try to get a picture. =/

I still have to say, it's one thing to read about the burning power of these diodes, QUITE another thing to experience it first hand! Now I keep thinking how I am going to scrounge up the extra cash for a second, then a third.....

Do you observe any warm-up variations? We're looking for data related to current and power.

I'm not sure. Without a LPM I can't measure the power output, and the host I have it in doesn't leave any way to check the current at the diode. I could always check the power from the battery, but that wouldn't help much I think.

I smear Tuniq TX-2 between the Aixiz module and Slim 18650 sink. It has some of the highest thermal conductivity of paste out there. After 20 seconds of 885mW and over 600mA, the Al sink is just warm, not hot.

I run an 808nm 1W 9mm diode in a machined Aixiz module at 1.5A on a V5 flexdrive, that makes the sink hot in about 12-15 seconds, but is putting out about 1.2W after the lens. The 18650 Al sinks are plenty beefy for handheld duty cycles under 1A. If they are getting hot, the duty cycle is way too long.

Wonder what could be done with TEC cooling thrown in the mix??

I would love to invest in a bad arse BR labbie.

I might have to get one and slap it into my 'Ice Box' TEC build with drlava's new driver that I've got...

But I feel like it may be better to wait for the next higher power blu-ray diode for that set up...

Mike,

This is exactly what I observed when I plotted my 12X diode. As I remember it took about 45 seconds for the current draw and diode output to stabilize. I do not remember the forward voltage changing much if at all.
Right now my builds output starts at 600mw than climbs to 630mw or so.

I think that when discussing this, we need to know the driver and power source as well. It is the only way to observe if it is a diode specific phenomenon. Maybe we should start a separate thread just for this question. There is a lot of other stuff discussed in this thread.

Dave,

Sorry, I had posted earlier post #207 that had my build specifications.

I used V5 flexdrive, Jayrob 405 G-1 Lens. Measurements taken from a regulated power supply and a digital DVM amp meter between the output of the driver and + in of the diode. Output power was measured with the Coherent LaserCheck. Voltage was set at 3.7 volts to simulate the battery I would use.

Hope that will clear things up a bit.

Doug
