Considering the threshold for the 1W diodes is around 250mA, I'd be surprised if you could get anything lower than 100mW before it stops lasing.

It's still getting the correct Amperage, but only half the Voltage. I'll take a picture and/or video for you if you'd like. I haven't tested it that much, but it might just be an LED at that point. It does have a small dot that I can focus, though.

Edit: I just tried this again, and as far as I can tell, it's still lasing.

Lasing, or just LEDing? Just because you see blue doesn't mean it's lasing. There's a substantial jump in brightness when it begins to lase.

Why does a 1W 445nm diode cost $50 and a 5mW one cost $100? Is it because the 5mW is single mode or something?

Because the high powered ones can be found in decent quantities inside certain DLP projectors, whereas the lower powered ones aren't as common, usually only used in things like picoprojectors at the moment.

Because they aren't as common, basically.

Would you be able to find a 445nm laser at about 100mW with a decent price?

It could very well be an LED, and I wish I had a bench PSU to better test it with. What should I be looking for to determine weather it's lasing or not?

^^ Around $30 will be decent for me. Although I think it is probably going to be a lot more expensive. :cryyy:

I have a z-bolt 635pen and its very nice quality, I would expect their 5mw 445nm pen to be similar.

Also have you considering making your own? Single mode 445nm diode, pen host, driver, two 10440 cells and you have yourself a very nice laser.

@norbie : $100 is a tad to expensive for me, I will rather buy a M140 diode for $50!

@udanis : Can you maybe suggest where I can buy such a diode? I am familiar with the usual sites(O-Like, Odicforce, DTR's site...) but I haven't seen a single-mode diode there.

I was VERY disappointed with their 445 sapphire.

I think I paid more for their 5mw 445 pointer than I did for my 100mw 445 laser from Lazerer. I didn't know about Lazerer yet when I made the Zbolt purchase :(

Well, it'd probably require a bench PSU. I use a transistor as a variable resistor and increase the current until it goes from a dim LED-looking light to a laser-looking light. The difference is substantial, like it just "bursts" with light when it passes the threshold.

Keep in mind that the m140's are multi mode but can deliver higher power.

This guy OSRAM PL450B 450nm 80mW blue laser diode /Single mode/round dot [OL-450-50] - $46.00 : Zen Cart!, The Art of E-commerce
is the lower power single mode 445-450nm diode that could be an option if you are looking for something less powerful/for pointer use.
