Hi Everyone,

This was one of my first laser i ever built and it is a budget build laser.:) So i took it apart to post it .I wanted to build a laser as cheap as possible and see how good it would turn out well here it is.

Before i go on Flaminpyro is offering a nice kit for this laser set up, Check it out >>Here<<

Its a 100mW PHR-803T Laser in a Black Cree C3 Host with a Extension Tube.:D It takes 2 14500 3.7V Batteries.(When fully charged there 4.2v, so total 8.4v.)

I am using a LM317T with a simple 10ohm Resistor for the Driver Witch is giving me 126mA. At this current the Lm317T does not get hot but warm to the touch so i did not need to heatsink it.

For the Heatsink I took the Aluminum Reflector that comes with the Flashlight host and Flipped it around and Drilled a hole to fit the AixiZ module in, But i dint make it exactly the same size but a little smaller so i can press fit the module in for a tight fight for best heat transfer.:) I can tell you that this laser can run forever and does not get hot but ever so slightly warm.

Then I took apart the Pill and de-solider everything on the original Flashlight driver. I Drilled a simple hole in the center of the pill because the diode pins need to go through there because there to long and need alittle more room.(Look at picture below.):)

So Overall this is a Great DIY Build and i am happy with this laser.

Price of build: There are different variation of the reflector so i cannot guaranty that it will be the same as mine. Also i want to mention that if you have zero knowledge on Complete DIY lasers i would not try this build.
Host with Extension tube:
DealExtreme: $10.37 UltraFire C3 Cree 1xAA 1x14500 Flashlight (with Holster) $10.37 (There are different variation of the reflector so i cannot guaranty that it will be the same as mine.)
DealExtreme: $4.04 UltraFire C3 2xAA Extension Tube $ 4.04
PHR-803T and AixiZ Module:
HighTechDealZ - 405nm PHR803T Blu Ray Laser Sled $10.52
HighTechDealZ - Aixiz Laser Module - Blank $3.39
LM317T:
Adjustable-Voltage Regulator LM317T - RadioShack.com $2.49
10 ohm Resistor:
Salvaged from an old cable box $Free
Batteries:
DealExtreme: $4.73 TrustFire Protected 14500 3.7V 900mAh Lithium Batteries (2-Pack Blue) $4.73

Total: $35.54:wave:

Now for the Pictures:
Sorry for the first four being alittle blurry i thought i had it on Macro.

First i just Drilled a hole in the center of the pill.

I could not take a Picture of the hole that i drilled out of the aluminum reflector since this was an old build and i just took it apart so here is a picture of the Axiz module pressed into the reflector for the heatsink. On the left is just a picture of how the reflector looks before i drilled it out.

Here is a picture of the back side of the reflector that has now become the front side.(Note: I polished the reflector rim alittle to get it shinny like i did on my copper heatsink in my 445nm Cree R2 build.)

Heres a Picture of how i installed the driver. I cut off the three pins and the top part of the LM317T so it can fit inside the host.(Note: I forgot to take a picture but after this step i raped up the LM317T with Electrical tape so it dint short out touching the sides of the pill.):) Since the Lm317T dint get got i was not concerned with using Arctic Thermal adhesive to stick it to the pill. But if you were going to use this driver in higher currents just use a little Arctic thermal adhesive to stick it to the pill exactly how the picture looks for best heat transfer.

I used this schematics for the driver.

Soldered everything together and i was finished.

Wow. . . . . . . . .
Is it alright if i attempt this build?

^^^ Yes just like we talked about in PM.:) This is why i posted it for those that are interested and dont have alot of funds to build a more expensive laser or those that just want to add another build to there collection can build one Cheap.:D
_____

Also added another beam shot.:san:

What kind of lens where you using?:)

I am using an Aixiz 405-445nm glass lens.:D

Same lens maybe the diode I grabbed out of an old samsung player just sucked. But my sw is alive at ~210 and that makes me happy. Time for a 12X. Very nice build BTW.

Nice build! I want to build a 405 to go along with the 445 I recently bought. This build looks perfect as a first DIY. If you don't mind me asking I have two quick questions.

1. It looks like this is a case negative build so all you had to do was run a wire from the positive contact to the LM317's input then then from the output to the diode's positive pin? I couldn't really tell from your picture.

2. What size bit did you use to drill out the reflector and pill? I ask because I know I don't have a bit that big but I know my brother does so I can borrow one from him.

Yes that is correct, But i also ran the Negative of the diode to the Negative of the stock driver. Make sure you de-solider every components of the stock driver.:)

For the Reflector i first used a 3/8 bit to start off and then did the rest with a dermal so i Can make sure that it was a very tight fit and i assure you it is tight.:) Also Be patent with the reflector if you use a dermal to do it like i did. Its tough but within 10 min i had it perfect.:D Iam not sure the exact bit to use for an Aixiz Module.

For the Pill i just wanted to make a small hole because i was acutely going to Mount the LM311T under the hole with some Arctic thermal adhesive but with a PHR the LM317T does not get hot so it was pointless. Just make sure you tap up the corners so you dont get a short. But i used a 1/4 Bit for the Pill.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. Something that I hadn't thought of before if a standard module is 12 mm that's .472 inches which is slightly larger than 7/16 which is .4375. A 15/32 would be almost an exact match at .469 but I don't think I've ever seen one. Obviously I'd have to measure the module I plan on using since they could vary a bit.

Oh the joys of insomnia......

:p

That is a really great looking build for 35 bucks! I love how you used the reflecting cone or whatever it is called to act as a heatsink!

Great build and easy for a beginner, I might be making one if I ever make another DX order. I built a red with the simple 2-part circuit, but it's in a box and looks funny/ugly. It really works and you don't the other parts like in the DDL, but it would be nicer as a thin little flashlight:) Thank you for posting this!

Just Make sure you dont make the hole to big in the Reflector, you want to have a nice tight fit that you can use your vice to press fit the top half of the module in.:)

Thanks.:) I wanted to keep it s cheap as possible and use as much of the parts that come with the flashlight or that i have at home. For a PHR the Reflector "heatsink" works very good. It never gets hot but slightly warm after 4-5 min at 100mW.

.

Yea i was watching your thread. Good job on that. I might build another one and put an LOC in this build for matching hosts. But i would make sure to Thermal adhesive the LM317t to the pill like i stated above and also to make sure the LM317T did not get to hot at higher current.:D

this looks REALLY nice and i would like to try this, but are there any video tutorials on how to do this. It dosent even have to be this specific host, just so i know what to do

This looks like an awesome build, and I think it'd be a great first build for me. Once I get paid on Friday, I'm ordering the parts :D
