Shipping on that auction is $15, but climbak was saying that he pushed his XBOX diodes to 100mW.

Remember that there appear to be 2 different type of diodes in the 360 HD addon.

www laserpointerforums com/ forums/YaBB.pl?num=1204080284/120

Late in this thread (reply 133 shows the 2 sleds) there is a description of the two types. One type is much more powerful than the other...make sure that you know which one you have, so you drive it appropriately.

(I can't post links yet, so remove the spaces.)

Edit: Put correct post reply number above - thanks to Daguin for posting the link for me!

can anyone confirm the functionality of these diodes?

No.

Buying things "as is" from ebay means they will have *something* wrong with them. In most cases it's something simple and mechanical, like the eject button not working... Still, some drives may be labeled "as is" because their lasers have burnt out. You can never really tell.

Several people have bought broken drives from ebay and had great luck with them.. Your chances are really quite good, but every broken drive breaks in a different way, so you never know.

As far as whether or not people have successfully harvested diodes from a 360's HD-DVD drive and gotten them to lase, yes, they have. Check the link above, some of the older ones in fact have much higher powered lasers in them, you might get lucky.

I have bought an xbox HD-DVD from those guys on ebay... the drive looks brand new. They aren't just going to send you a hunk of crap or anything. I never plugged it in, but it looked like it would have worked. The drive did indeed have the diode in it, it was the 'weaker' one (which I have ran as high as 180mA for testing) but someone else got one with the 'stronger' one.

Good find, just be aware there are two internal xbox sleds, only only one of which has the high powered bluray diodes. Though you can certainly make a decent bluray pointer from either sled.

So if you're willing to take a chance you might be able to score a 50-100mW diode from these.

I've gotten the best red diodes from out of warranty broken DVD writers. The diode is usually the least likely part to die.

But it is true, that it's impossible to confirm the functionality of the diodes 100%. Sometimes diodes die even under normal circumstances.

Erm, you just resurrected a 2 year old thread...

XBOX HD-DVD addon drives could contain one of two diodes, the PHR-803T and the DT-0811. The 360 itself only has a low power red reader diode.

Only the HD-DVD ADD-ON player had the PHR-803T or the DT-0811 sled in them. The game player has no useful diodes in it (for us)
