Hello Everyone,

This thread is meant to be helpful for newcomers that are wondering what to include in their Introduction thread. I've seen a lot of new users post very brief and un-descriptive threads that basically tell us nothing, similar to the following:

greetings!

Im matt im 26 and I'm from usa and I want to learn more about lasers

That is an example. There are many things that can be improved in that intro. Some primary things to include in your introduction thread are:

* Name
* Age
* Location
* Occupation
* Where you stand with lasers.

If you don't feel comfortable saying any of the above then that is absolutely fine.

You might not understand what I meant when I said "Where you stand with lasers". This basically means; are you an expert, do you not know what they are, why do you like them, are they involved in your occupation, etc. Tell us your current relationship to lasers.

So our example (Matt) has listed some of those things, but not in very much detail. Let's do a breakdown of Matt's post:

* Name - Capital letters for names is preferable!
* Age - That's all we really need to know :p
* Location - The USA is a big place, a specific state would be better.
* Occupation - He hasn't told us anything about his job.
* Where you stand with lasers - He said he wants to learn more, that's not very much info.

Looking at the above points, here's an improved version of Matt's introduction:

Hello Laser Enthusiasts,

My name is Matt, I am 26 years old and I live in Texas. I work in a office supply company which basically involves me sitting at a computer the entire day, it gets boring. Anyway, a guy at work brought in a green laser pointer the other day and I was instantly amazed! I found this forum by a quick Google search and can't wait to learn more about lasers and hopefully buy/build my own.

You could obviously add a lot more onto the thread and include a lot of in-depth detail about your life, but nobody likes huge walls of text ;).

Also, if you're from an English speaking country, try to use the best spelling/grammar you can. No one's perfect but it just makes it easier to read when someone uses acceptable spelling, grammar, etc. If you're not from an English speaking country or if English isn't your strong suit then just do your best, we'll most likely be able to "de-code" your message :).

Another good thing to do is to use bold and/or different coloured text for important words or points in your thread. If you're wanting to highlight something I find yellow works best. I recommend using bold instead of an underline as to me it stands out more and it will not be mistaken for a link.

So that's basically it, just try to tell us your name, age, location, occupation and where you stand with lasers, as well as anything else you want to include.

I want to make it clear that this thread is just meant to act as a guideline. Still try to be creative and original in your introductions!

Thanks for reading, I hope this was helpful :wave:

Thanks,
Gun

Also, if there's anything you think I should add in here, let me know :beer:

I don't want to see canned introductions, this is just meant to be a guideline. I think I'll put that in there :p

"Here's how to introduce yourself"
"Disclaimer, do whatever you feel like"

Lol, it good for another link to post in peoples face when they don't introduce themselves.

Ahaha okay, I'll try to change it a bit so it doesn't seem like I'm contradicting myself.
