Hello, Dan here from northern illinois, purchasing first laser.

I recently became interested in purchasing a 5mw laser and unfortunately i ordered one from the company that seems to do the best job advertising, WL. After browsing around to learn more about laser pointers as an afterthought, I discovered this forum. I found out that WL takes forever to deliver. So i read multiple threads about reputable sellers and safety and decided to buy from Optotronics. I ordered a 55mw green laser on received it promptly. I realize that this is not an ideal power level for a first laser but im treating it with much respect. I plan on spending more time outside this summer and learning about stars. I dont have an interest in burning. The laser is awesome but i have nothing to compare it to. Thanks to all those taking the time to share their knowledge. I'll be checking in to learn more.

Welcome, Dan. Congrats on your purchase and on finding the forum. It sounds like you have been browsing LPF a bit already, but don't skimp on the safety section or the stickies. Forum etiquette is fairly simple, but worth reviewing. Invest in some safety glasses for use when not pointing at stars... if nothing else, it's better to have them and not need them, than be tempted to violate prudent safe operation at the expense of your vision.

Have fun and be safe. There is a lot to learn here.. Heck, I haven even scratched a scratch yet.

Thank you for the welcome! :thanks: I updated my profile a bit and have spent quite a bit of time reading stickie and edicate suggestions. I have really enjoyeds the Optotronics 55mw laser and have finally received my WL core. I will say getting a 5mw laser after owning a 55mw laser is a little anti climactic. The core beam is visible at night though so i prefer to carry it around for fun rather than the 55mw opotronic.
I noticed that scifi lasers has some great deals on higher power lasers. I might look into purchasing one from there as the proprietor is Joker something who seems to have a great reputation as a member here.

Welcome Dan and grats on your first laser. I'm glad to have another Northern Illinois resident with us, there might be enough of us to start holding events soon lol.
