I wouldn't go near a 500mw laser that cost $50. At that price the parts, worksmanship and quality control would be bottom of the barrel. If it really does pump put 500mw it will probably die or break down fairly quickly, and good luck trying to get your money back from a cheap ass chinese company.
Even if it does work, that much power is insanely dangerous and I wouldn't want it in a laser built to the lowest quality standards.
And as a first laser, what the hell are you thinking? That's no different than buying a Magnum as your first "training gun." Since you've never handled one before, you're bound to make mistakes, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a nubie who has a 500mw as his "training laser."
I agree with Toke, $50 would be a decent price for a reasonable laser at 50mw - but 500? I woudn't think anything under $300 would be safe.

People like that have their heads up their ass and think of lasers as a toy. And maybe a 5mw laser could be played with as a toy... but once you start getting upwards of the 100mw range, you're starting to edge into "easy eye injury" territory.
Just replace the work "laser" with "gun." Would you go out and buy the cheapest, highest power GUN so you could go out and shoot tin cans? Of course not.
