Hey all. I haven't looked at the forums too heavily but I know this is the right place. Getting into lasers is a new thing outside of what my cat has chased around the living room for the last 11 years. Can't say if I'll be around for very long or not but it'll be a good hobby to work on till the next big thing comes along. Until then, I'm all for learning and figuring out these things.

A few years back I spotted this video which piqued my interest since communications, HF/UHF, Amateur, and other kinds of radio have been a hobby for years.

Video: Weekend Project: Make a Simple Laser Communicator - YouTube
Site: MAKE | Simple Laser Communicator

Simple little gimmick, like the basic FM transmitter we made in an electronics class in high school sometime in the mid 90s.

Looking to find out how to build my own laser range finder, color detector, "burning" laser, and ones of all colors and patterned lenses too.

Now, I'm just interested in the lasers themselves. Watts, power, etc etc. So please be gentle - this is my first time ;)

On a related note, I want to get one of these laser power detectors: Homemade Lightsaber!?! MASSIVE 3W Handheld Laser Torching Stuff!! - YouTube

That is a 5W LaserBee LPM being used in the video
you linked to.
For a beginner in Lasers we have much less expensive
entry level Laser Power Meters available.
Here are a few...

IMo- you fall a little short on this intro'
But much better than none--
We would like to see your location under your username= and that will only happen if you just add that bit of info into your personal file. +

also its a good idea to use edit rather than double posting.

We have more excellent links and info to provide you- & with luck you may have a fellow member or two living close by-

A quick read here is not much.. some spend weeks , months or longer checking out the tutorials- reviews-reading most of every 'stickie' in each section etc.. So as we know you are bound to have questions we appreciate those that take the time--use the search and find answers on their own time.

If you don't find your answer first try just change the search terms -try good old google- and our guru of laser info Sam's laser FAQ. .

SO WELCOME (insert first name here) to our forum- Nice to see another new member from (insert your location here) we have some great members not far from you.

And please edit your post #2 by dele and copy it into your OP.

Above all take care around lasers- safety must be number one if we hope to keep this 'hobby' alive.

Hey Len...

Sounds a little harsh... IMO :undecided:

I don't see that this new member falls short on this intro'
just because he hadn't included his location from the get go.

There are long time members here that still don't have their
location in there Sigs.

Ive also seen one line intros on the Forum that would certainly
fall much better into falling short on intros..

Perhaps we could cut this new member a little slack...;)

Welcome to the forum! PM me if you're still interested in an Ophir sensor for measuring your lasers.
