Default Newbie just joined.

Hello, I'm new, not active on any forums. Just have an interest in finding some IR laser diodes from 1200nm to 2400nm from 500mw to 1 watt or higher. I can build my own power supply and all as an electronics technician with many years experience building circuit boards myself. However, if I could find a high power pointer in that range it would be even better. I'd consider buying diodes of different frequencies between that range too. I need it for a special project I can't disclose to anyone, due to the unusual nature of the project.

I am from the USA but working in Afghanistan on a US Air Base.

Chris

Oh, by the way, I posted a request here for this yesterday but can't find it, does the forum email when it is authorized and where I can find it? I don't remember where it was posted to for sure now. PS I donated 20 bucks to the forum yesterday.

Thanks for your warnings, I will take them into consideration and as far as safety, 100%. Does anyone have a recommendation for a IR laser in the 1200 to 2400nm or longer wavelength? Looking for a diode or complete laser pointer, laser head or other complete system which will operate in that bandwidth at 1 watt or higher, 5+ watts of immediate interest. Need something with as tight a beam width as possible, any remarks on which type of laser to buy for a very tight beam width? I am looking at a 5W 805nm diode laser on ebay from China, if I can't find something above 1100nm, but they give no specs beyond that and the TO3 package. I prefer the longer wavelength above 1400nm due to being somewhat safer at a distance, of course, still very dangerous due to burning.

Future posts on this subject will be in the proper forum, letting you know why I came and a hello. Please send me a PM if you can point me in the right direction! Thanks!

Chris

Can't tell you what for except a generalization, range finding. I'm centering on a 1.5um pulse laser now, looking for one at a surplus price as I am funding this project out of my paycheck.

Thanks!

Sounds like a long ranger LIDAR project - I could be wrong but!

Those powers are stupidly dangerous. Typically these wavelengths cant even be seen by a common video camera which can be used to see "normal (808nm and 1064)" IR ranges. Specialised NV or MIR vision gear is needed. Light of this kind is a strange beast. Stuff that normally looks clear looks partially opaque to this type of energy. So it bounces back a reflection, albeit a weak one, kinda like RADAR does with a radio beam.

Oh and you can't see it like you can a visible laser beam. Be careful!

Sounds like LIDAR, I know, but not. Range finding for close in at low levels, long distance only illumination purposes.
