Hi all. New member here. I have been a hobby builder of small electronics for a while (among other things- programming, physics, drooling over women and cars I can't afford), so I figured getting in to lasers is a good next-step. I'm sure integrating them into my projects will provide endless entertainment, although the girlfriend is certain to scowl at the new money-pit.

I ended up getting a bluray diode, Aixiz module, and rckstr driver (set@100mW) from HighTechDealz. I don't have my housing, it's still waiting to ship from DX, so I had to rig one. As you can see below, it's a mini-breadboard, double-sided tape, wires and a 9v housing. Certainly a marvel of engineering :na:

As my current goggles are junk (not CE certified) I'm nervous about playing with it and kept my testing brief. I was, however, able to light matches within only 2-3 seconds when focused properly. Very impressed, I thought it would take much longer with 100mW.

I ordered two pairs of goggles from OEM Laser Systems, so hopefully they'll get here soon. =) I already feel the itch to actually start building (maybe a HeNe tube or one of those multi-watt Coherent diode bars :D) and integrate into some type of project (I do have a spare arduino laying around, so if you have ideas, let me know!)

Sorry, pics are from cell phone camera (trash is from cleaning up my work area, :D):

Welcome! You come bearing Blu-ray beam shots & are keeping safety in mind? Double welcome! I'm a fan of microcontrollers as well. :D

Welcome to the forum! Nice to see you get that bluray going immediately, and laser goggles are a very good (essential) idea. Treat those Coherent bars with healthy respect, multiwatt IR poses its' own safety challenges. These are bar line emitters, so you don't get a clean beam with one lens like we do with the smaller diodes. It is easy to focus to a burning point, however. You can also use the bar to drive a YAG rod, and then collimate the 1064 nm beam from the rod. You will of course need IR goggles rated for this level of power. You'll find lots of build info here, and don't forget Sam's Laser Faq.
