Thanks guys but we are definately going to try it with a laser because of several reasons. We will do the experiment in the evening , so the dike can still be seen but the laser will not have to travel through bright daylight. No problem with delivering probably cause we're living in Holland. When the spot will be reasonably round that will be okay . We will put a big white board on the end of the dike so the laser spot will be clearly visible. We will film the spot with superzoom camera from where the laser stands and also from nearby where the board is . We might deliberately choose the 10x expander because of the bigger diameter compared to the 20 x - it then will be easier to photograph and film from this long distance.

Looks like both EU and Netherlands restricts hand held laser to <1mW so CNI may not ship something like a PGL 500 532nm to there. You m,ay have to go with a lab style laser. From what I can see: Netherlands
Before 1998 Class 3A lasers were allowed. In 1998 it became illegal to trade Class 2 laser pointers that are "gadgets" (e.g. ball pens, key chains, business gifts, devices that will end up in children's possession, etc.). It is still allowed to trade Class 2 (< 1 mW) laser pointers proper, but they have to meet requirements regarding warnings and instructions for safe use in the manual. Trading of Class 3 and higher laser pointers is not allowed

I contacted CNI and indeed they cannot provide the PGL's to Holland but they do can deliver all the lasermodules like the MGL series..

Better look for a generator or portable power pack. How much current is being drawn by the driver?
You could look into a euro version of one of these and run it off 12v car batteries.

Or get the OEM driver - last MGL (0.5W 532) I had came with an OEM driver which ran on 5VDC. Could run it off of a couple LiPo packs (or Lead Acid battery) and a 5V regulator.

Assuming those drivers still run on 5V. Super handy actually because you can jumper the 5VDC input to the MOD+ input for running standalone. :p

What do you guys think is preferable for our long distance experiment - use a 5 W 532nm laser with 10 x beam expander OR use a 500 mW 532 nm laser with a 30 X beam expander. Any opinions ? Thanks!

Third option. 5W with 30x expander

Yeah , probably :) ! But that third option is quite expensive also , but we might go for that anyway ...
