Hey all, my name is joe, I live in the UK and am currently looking at building a laser.

Bit of background;
I have a friend that I used to live with when I was at uni, and he built up a few lasers from blu-rays and CD drives. I was always interested (throughout school I was always good as design and technology - soldering, sawing, metal work and some PCB systems work) in the lasers that he built. However at the time it was not something I wanted to get into.

However recently (bear with me here lol) I have gotten back into warhammer 40k. The army that I collect has no decent form of transportation - all the cases I could buy are either far far too expensive, don't give me the configuration options I require or are just generally rubbish! Lol.

So I have started cutting my own with a craft knife - slow and very untidy to say the least!! My thought then came back to a laser cutters - can I build a laser that will cut through some soft foam, sort of stuff you would find in a sofa or chair.

So I have signed up here in the hope that through some research, and well placed questions I can end up making a laser that can achieve my goal.

I hope over the next few weeks, months, that I can get to know some people on here, learn a lot about what I am doing and ultimately make a laser that I can safely use.

Many thanks all,
Joe

Welcome to LPF! If you have any questions make sure to ask them in the right category. We will try to answer them to the best of are ability as fast as we can. Also make sure to wear safety glasses whenever operating lasers above 5mw.

hey guys, thanks for the welcome! :). Always nice to come to a friendly forum (quick question - cam i use more emoticons than the button gives me?)

haha yeah first thing that my gf said when i explained was "don't do it if its dangerous!" had to explain its just about caution, safety and respecting what an item such as this can do - Sensible all the way. Also been reading some of the stickers, all seem to mention goggles, and while i knew the risks thats has made me definitely to consider no construction until i have the right level of protection.
