Hooked after buying a "100mw" green laser, wanting advice and saying Hello!!

So, I bought one of these on a whim

5 in 1 100mW 532nm Mid-open Kaleidoscopic Green Laser Pointer Pen at Laserpointerpro.com

It's really cool and much much much more impressive than the 5mw blue I bought on E-bay. But I'm wondering just how powerful it may be.

It for sure will not burn through black plastic or light stuff on fire no matter what I try, but it's pretty bright and has good range.

However, I want to get another one that is in fact brighter and has a better power source than the AAA's that don't last but a few minutes.

I either want another green or a blue and I'm not trying to spend more than $50 on my next one at this time, just wanting a new toy. But I want to make sure I get something is either rated correctly or is more powerful than it's advertised. Basically, I want something that is quite a bit brighter than what I have if I'm going to spend more money on something.

I've considered these, but I'd appreciate any advice. . . .

And perhaps this one, but I want to know that it being an "overspeced" 30mw will make it brighter than my "100mw" that I'm sure is underspeced.http://lazerer.com/Green_Laser_Pointer?product_id=128

Thanks in advance for your time guys.

chances are the green laser you have is not even close to 100mW and most likely contains allot of IR. so the over spec 30mW may very well be brighter

can you see the beem easily at night with your "100mW"?

I can see the beam very easily at night, and like I say, it blows the 5mw blue out of the water. But I do realize that the Green is going to show up more than the violet that I have. Sorry, I did say blue before, but it is violet, not blue.

Are the lasers here rated pretty accurately??

Re: Hooked after buying a "100mw" green laser, wanting advice and saying Hello!!

Thanks, and to clarify, I can see the beam at night if I'm somewhere where there are no street lights, etc. It's not super bright but you can see the beam well enough to point at stars in the sky, etc.

On a side note, I just got a "100mw" violet laser that I had ordered over a month ago from dailyshop.com It's much better than the 5mw violet laser I already had, but it still has the funny looking dot (I guess from UVF??) and it's not got near the range of the green one.

I think the biggest thing I'm looking for is something that is brighter with better battery life.

Do all the violet lasers have a beam that spreads out quicker than the green ones? Close up they are about the same, but 20-30 feet away the violet ones both spread out to a huge dot in comparison to the green one I have.

Most violet lasers at that power level that I've owned have had better beams than most of my greens in terms of divergence.

The "funny looking dot" is because of the fact that the light is just this side of UV, you were right on that.

Re: Hooked after buying a "100mw" green laser, wanting advice and saying Hello!!

From what you're describing it sounds like the green you have is probably 20-30mW.

Get yourself a decent 50mW green laser from lazerer.com that's powered by a 18650... battery life will be great.

The reason the dot from the 405nm (purple lasers) appears larger/funny/fuzzy is that your eyes simply can't focus on it. If you view the dot through safety goggles you will see that it's actually a very nice round dot.

Ready up on laser safety while you're here.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the advice. These things sure are fun in my bedroom with my fog machine, lol

Yeah, these literally have a couple of minutes before they dim drastically, and that's getting old fast

So this. . .

LZCS - 405nm 100mW Focusable Violet Laser Pointer

or this. . .

LZCB - 532nm 50mW Focusable Green Laser Pointer

Should blow what I have out of the water in regards to light output, quality, and battery life??

Re: Hooked after buying a "100mw" green laser, wanting advice and saying Hello!!

Battery and quality should be better but I dunno about light output,,personally. Watching your vids, the violet one seems to have a stronger beam to me, I would have thought it should be the other way round. I'm thinking the violet one could be very close to spec and the green one probably quite a bit under - just my thoughts :)
Thats good news to me (maybe),, I ordered one of those violet 100mw from daily shop about 5 weeks ago. I'd given up on it arriving and opened a paypal dispute last week.

At least if you buy from Lazerer you will be able to also buy a power certificate and know exactly what the power output is.

DKS: Now you have the lasers and smoke machine, you'll be wanting a couple of small round mirrors glued onto pc fans so you can start doing 'tunnels', spirographs and other crazy effects :D

Re: Hooked after buying a "100mw" green laser, wanting advice and saying Hello!!

Actually, after I shot the vids, I realized that the green was already getting weak. If I pop brand new batteries in both at the same time and turn them on, the green is for sure much brighter. However, the green looses power much faster than the violet. Basically, during the time I shot the vids of each of the separately, the green was used enough to dim that much. I'll try to re-do the vid of both of them together with fresh bats in both and post it up later for a more accurate comparison.

I had just asked them for my money back yesterday morning and the laser came in the mail afterwards. It took almost exactly a month for mine to get to me from them.

And thanks Stix, great idea, I'll add to my shopping list today, lol

I used to be a Rave DJ/Club owner, I can't believe I'm just now getting into this stuff again and it's so fun. My basement used to be cooler than a lot of clubs I've been too.

Edit: At least with new batteries I know the dot on the green is way brighter than the dot on the violet, not sure about the beam in the fog, but in the house you can see the beam on the green when you can't see the beam of the violet at all, I'd assume with the smoke it should be the same, too. Sorry for the misleading vid, I didn't realize until I had posted it that the bats were weaker in the green when I shot it.

Is the 18650 much better than the CR123's? I saw this and it has some pretty good reviews, but I'm sure the people reviewing it aren't nearly as savvy as you guys and probably would be impressed with any green laser, lol

Just figured I'd get some opinions just in case it's a good choice. But most likely I'm going with one of the ones from Laserer linked above.

Re: Hooked after buying a "100mw" green laser, wanting advice and saying Hello!!

The 18650's can have around 3000mAh,,,the CR123 (or 16340) - 880mAh.
That basically means the 18650's 'should' last nearly 4 x longer. Of course they're twice the size also.

Re: Hooked after buying a "100mw" green laser, wanting advice and saying Hello!!

Sweet, good to know. I knew I came to the right place for advice :thanks:

As promised, here is a video of both with fresh batteries. In the video the Violet still looks a little brighter to me, but in person the Green looks to have a much brighter spot for sure. The beam seems about the same if not a little brighter on the Violet, though (is that crazy?)

Ok guys, which one of these is the best bang for the buck???

This. . . .

LZCS - 532nm 50mW Focusable Green Laser Pointer

or this. . . .

LZCB - 532nm 50mW Focusable Green Laser Pointer

Or. . . . . in the same price bracket but twice the power. . . .

LZCS - 405nm 100mW Focusable Violet Laser Pointer

Would the violet in 100mw be more or at least as visible as the green laser in 50mw or would the green still appear brighter due to the wavelength??

Would I be able to see the violet laser's beam at night in the sky at 100mw like I would the green at 50mw??

Any other "trusted" sites I need to be checking out, too??

I really like these as well, but they don't say that they are overspeced. So, I don't want to get it unless I know it will be as bright as the "50mw" ones I linked above from Laserer.

Re: Hooked after buying a "100mw" green laser, wanting advice and saying Hello!!

O-like is generally on spec or close to it. The only two major differences between (o-like and lazerer) IMO are that Lazerer tends to have better/more communicative service, and sends products out faster. You also have the optional power certificate... which is great if you don't have an LPM.

The power rock is a very nice host though... I'm about to order one strictly for the host actually:p

Well, I started to order the one from 0-type and it looks like you have to use Western Union. WTF??

Saw a thread the other day saying the same thing about western union > http://laserpointerforums.com/f45/o-like-crown-upgrade-400mw-400mw-green-western-union-70761.html

Of those 3 lasers you listed above,,,personally, I'd go for the 100mW violet one. My reason for that is violet is pretty damn close to my fave colour anyway (got a Lazerer 500mW 405nm Rifle on order :) ), and it will be a great balloon popper :D

Re: Hooked after buying a "100mw" green laser, wanting advice and saying Hello!!

So, should the 100mw violet look brighter than the 50mw green? And should the beam of it be as visible at night as the lower powered green one?

I know power for power green shows up better to our eyes, but when the violet is twice the power would it balance it out?
