Cool Hi there

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum... Like many of you here, I've had several little (red) laser pointers over the years, and even a green one or two mounted to the side of a rifle from time to time. It wasn't until I stumbled onto some chinese site (DHgate) and picked up a blue laser that I really became interested in how these things work, the safety precautions required when "playing", and just how many types of lasers there are out there! I'm doing a bunch of reading and might pickup another (less funky looking) blue laser here soon... oh and more glasses! I've only got one pair right now...

Anywho, I'm a computer networking dude, I do home theater & AV work on the side, am into cars and boats, and have a lovely wife that is VERY patient with all my toys and general shenanigans...

back to research and reading...

ps, here's the link to the laser I picked up: Best Beam Laser - Cheap Waterproof 10000mw 10w Focusable Burning Blue Laser Pointer Laser Glasses Free Online with $130.96/Piece | DHgate

anyone farmiliar with this unit? I know the wattage ratings are *way* exaggerated haha, but still a neat little device - brighter than anything I've ever seen before.

Hello, and welcome to LPF!

Now, about the laser you listed I can't tell you much about it but I will advise you be extremely cautious around it(not saying you aren't) since the goggles they provided with it most likely offer no protection at all(most cheap goggles do nothing to protect your eyes).

Welp, I'm not gonna lie... while I didn't wear the goggles every time I turned that thing on inside, and not once the two times I used it outside at night (and no, I'm not the kinda person that would ever shine it on anything living or man-made, by default) to see just how visible the beam was, after reading up on the site today - I now have a LOT more respect for these things than I did before! Holy cow... I'm glad I didn't accidentally hit a picture frame or something and reflect back at my face! :-O

Anyways, I ordered a couple pairs of 'Eagle Pair' goggles today (the 190-540nm flavor for now) off of Survival... It's was really kind of an eye opener for me to see how much 'laser' you can get and just how easily - with no forewarning as to what kind of damage they can really do.

I'm going to keep reading and researching...

Hello Justin and welcome. Very nice looking laser, I have seen that host a couple of times here in other threads, don't know if it was the same laser or not, I think that host may be used for multiple different lasers. Based on the price I would expect its power to be more in the range of 1.5w, still very powerful. Good choice on the safety glasses.

Well my laserbee showed up a couple of days ago... It seems this thing is down on power (compared to what they were even attempting to advertise! haha)... it came in at around 640mW... still the most powerful laser I had ever seen (short of what you see at a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert) ... so I'm now looking at expanding my (new) hobby stock with a quality 445 and 532 to start... I got my two pairs of Eagle Pair goggles and cheapy tripod in from Survival - very fast shipping!

As IF I needed another hobby!! haha... Glad to have found this site and all of you enthusiasts!

Welcome Justin, thats a nice looking laser you have there. It is something a bit different than the multitudes that are spun on a lathe. I do like the plain elegant hosts but I like that one of yours because it is the complete opposite!

Welcome to LPF! Eagle Pair are nice, so grats on a good purchase there... and if you snoop around here a bit, you'll find there are some great artisan laser craftsmen on the forum that can build you custom lasers to meet your budget. IT networking professionals make enough to at least get something of decent quality that will last

Be safe and have fun. Check out the archives via the search tool at the bottom of each page. There is a ton of info there in pretty much every laser-related interest area.

Cheers!

Howdy, howdy Justin, welcome to LPF. People here are the best.
Many willing to help and lead their knowledge and experience.

The new laser, a 10 WATT pointer is just not true. The power is probably 1.5 -- 2.0W
judging by the look and price. Be careful, that is plenty enough power to cause eye
damage if not handled with respect. Get some Laser shades, like mentioned above,
Eagle Pair are nice

I took a look at this laser and it is definitely a misprint. There is no way this is a 10,000 mW laser. It runs off two 16340 batteries and that means it is probably a 1000mW up to a possible 1500mW laser. I would be careful in entering into a purchase agreement with these guys as they have no idea what they are selling.

Default Re: Hi there

So a little update for everyone here... I knew up front that my "gatlin style" laser purchased from DHGate.com was not going to be 10w... hahaha... or anything even close to it!

So after I got my LaserBee, I tested it and found it to be around 640mW... not bad, and still the most powerful laser I had ever owned.

When I went up to Tmack's house last last week to pickup my new set of 501b host lasers he built for me, I took my existing laser with me so we could LPM it on his nicer unit. His unit read very very close to what mine did... so I think my initial findings were confirmed - around 640-650mW... Then we changed the batteries!

Haha... he noticed that the batts I had purchased off Amazon had 3v written on the side of them, as opposed to the 3.7v his EFast batts had... so I said "ah what the hell, let's swap some of yours into my host and see what happens"... and wouldn't you know, that thing hit 1788mW on his LPM! haha... So it's now a fun little "pointer". I still probably paid a little too much for it, but it is a unique looking host (if you don't live in Bejing) and the power is WAY up from what it first was when I unboxed it. I'm a happy camper...

And my other set that I got from Tmack is very nice... check out the thread about them that I threw together here: Playing with my new TMack builds... (lots o' pics)

happy humpday...
