New member here!! Been poking around, and I like very much what I see.

First project already on the way!!

Items purchased :

Radio shack Jewlers tools, soldering iron, and brand spanking new Dremel tool!! The Dremel tool gives me a nice fuzzy feeling as it cuts very good, and is brand new! LOVE it!

My local pawn shop donated to me a used dvd player. I have the diode sitting next to me but havent extracted it from the can yet.. Still reading, and this particular diode is from a very early dvd player so it might not even work, so I may try to directly drive it since it cost me no money, and Im just curious!

Things I want to do.. Class IV blue ray with Icon flashlight mod! and screwdriver laser all in one mod..

I need a multimeter though first and foremost, and a vice!
* You will see me, and I will bug you :gun: jk

Welcome to LPF, Have fun with that just you might need some safety goggles depending of how much mW your outputing so there a must for almost all project ie all above 5 mW.
Aside from that have fun and use the search button alot its the most useful tool here (Besides all those who posted the stuff in them) :)

Hey bro, welcome to LPF.
For the experience it might be a good idea to make a "DDL" driver.
It is a linear driver capable of driving pretty much any laser diode.
Laser driver - It can be done
Just a word of warning though, if it is indeed a "dvd player" and not a writer. It will only be an infrared laser and you will only see a dim dim red if anything at all.
That dim red could easily still cost you at least some vision. Infrared is outside the visible spectrum but there are many kind that are easily capable of lighting things on fire. Think of what it would to to your eyes. Yours won't likely be as powerful but it will still do permanent damage.
Proper protective gear is a must in this hobby. Infrared is especially dangerous because you won't know damage is being done until way too late.
Have fun and play safe!
