I am a laser newbie who works in Hong Kong and just joined the LPF recently. I had been reading and re-reading all the stickies and posts for the past weeks and 'searching' fanatically.

Just like to express my gratitude to many whom had contributed in this forum, such vast amount of information and talents that I humbly felt more that I read, more a newbie I felt. :bowdown:



Right now, I am focusing most of my energy for finding the followings:

1) Safe practice and Safety goggles Basically, I have been and intend to treat all laser products as firearm with infinite range. For safegy goggle, I have my eyes on the OEM laser systems ARG STYLE 900 LARGE FITOVER, since I wear glasses. But also been thinking whether I will need another pair to cover other wavelengths :anyone:


2) Measuring equipment (probably a laserbee...but not urgent)


3) AA or AAA battery powered, rugged, small form factor, and ideally green but non-DPSS, barely burn-capable laser pointer, for my large size survival kit(probably a worm-can topic) Currently fixed my eyes on Optotronics Green Laser Pointers, but again, not too sure whether it's DPSS or not.


Currently, I own a keychain 1AAA green laser pointer (my uneducated guess is probably around 30mW? Mildly visible in a lit room, it can itch thru black plastic trashbag, but light no matches) and a cheap-cheap <5mW red keychain laser pointer. A Greatland rescue laser flare is on its way and also looking forward to that.

Welcome to the forum! I'm sure that you can find what you're looking for here

I'm fairly new to lasering as well, but afaik, all the 532nm handhelds are DPSS. Perhaps there are some non-DPSS 510's or 520's, but it'll take someone more experienced than I to verify.

I too wonder the same question, especially on the new 1AAA keychain green laser pointer I got. I could be wrong, but am under the impression that the DPSS module is longer and can't be too stable when operating in very cold temp. I wonder will it work to freeze that pointer in fridge(-4F) to prove that it is not DPSS...

There are 3 types of green diodes around; 510, 515, 520nm. They all can vary a bit, depending on heat.
Diodes are more stable, and reliable than are DPSS lasers. Unless you paid well over $100 for your keychain laser, it's a DPSS.

My 520nm SSW runs @ 115mW peak with a G-2 lens on it, and it is barely capable of burning electrical tape. But, that's not important to me. I wanted the wavelength.

Thanks for the tips! But did you ever stumble upon a LR44 or 1AAA keychain that use those 510, 515, 520nm diodes?

I managed to browse thru the La Spada Verdi thread, very nice looking host indeed.

To my knowledge, there are not any direct diode keychain lasers in any green wavelength.
