Hi everyone, I've been lurking around here for a while but figured I might as well sign up if I'm going to be getting into this hobby.

I've got a 50mW greenie from budgetgadgets, and a <5mW 405nm from ebay (real output is probably much higher though). I'm quite satisfied with both.

I don't know if other people have done these but there are a few cool things I discovered I can do with my UV laser that are pretty trippy.
1. Shine it on highlighters.
2. Put a bunch of different colored papers (bright are better) on a wall and then swirl the laser around over all of them with the lights off. It looks like the laser is constantly changing colors.
3. If they're serving gin and tonics at a party, point the laser through your drink and the beam looks whitish blue, because the tonic water glows. Good party trick. ;)
4. If you have any glow in the dark stuff, drag your laser across it and the glow will sit there in a straight line and not fade for a few minutes. Its best if you get some glow in the dark putty (ThinkGeek :: Smart Mass Thinking Putty click on the glow in the dark pictures). Then you can really trip people out by morphing the shapes you've already drawn. Definitely worth buying!

Do you guys have any other cool tricks for bright green or UV lasers? I've already tried burning with the greenie, works fairly well on black plastic but not worth the effort for anything else.

I look forward to getting to know this place better. :)

Hi Meebs,

Thanks for joining and posting. One part of your post especially caught my eye (sorry for the inadvertent laser pun). ;)

It is not a good idea to be shining a laser through glassware or at any reflective surfaces (white walls included) in a room full of people unless you and all of the others are wearing safety goggles. That beam could go in unexpected directions and someone could get eye damage before you or they even have time to react. :tsk: I know--I'm a party poop,:eg:

Seriously, lase safely, and again, welcome and read a lot about laser safety.

I generally don't shine it on any glass or metals, or really anywhere when I don't know which direction it will reflect in. This was a special case as I was holding the cup up, I wasn't just shining it in there as they were drinking from it, haha. I appreciate the tips though.

Wow I just realized how much the case of the syder arctic looks EXACTLY like the case of a lightsaber. I'm sure thats no accident. :p

i wish whiskey had the same effect. damn...
But welcome to LPF! ive been here a few short months and my girlfriend is SERIOUSLY pissed at how much money ive spent on lasers and not her, how much time i spend on the computer on this site, and how long she has to wear " those ugly ass goggles" when she comes over.

seriously buy goggles with or before your first mid-high powered laser. and im talking 50mw and up if not even lower than that. you dont want to blind yourself

once again WELCOME you will love it.
