Hi there everybody!

My name is Dan and I'm here for some laser action.

I'm 18 years old. I lived in London, UK for 12 years then moved to Helsinki, Finland.

I'll pretty much tell now that my main interest for lasers is the photography I can achieve.

I'm a really avid photographer and love long exposure photos.

I've pretty much planned and bought most parts to build a green laser.

And am planning on buying a 1w laser in the near future.

Lasers fasinate me for many reasons, most of which how so much light power can come from such a small thing.

Anyway,

Ask questions if you want!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for following my advice and posting a thread in the welcome section! I can tell you right now that we have a lot of people here who take really good photo's and so if you have any questions about lenses, exposure times, etc. there are people here who can offer their expertise.

Make sure to pick up a pair of laser safety glasses asap! As a photographer, I am sure you enjoy looking at the photo's you take, and if you are not protected your lasers can do quite a bit of damage to your eyes. A dose of common sense and a good pair of glasses should keep you seeing just as well as the day you started this hobby.

That looks awesome! bit of advice though....most of the people on here will have difficulty viewing images of that size. Best practice is to use an online photohosting site like photobucket to resize the pictures to ~900x675 or somewhere around there. This will make pages load better for those with little RAM, and also people with smaller screens won't have to scroll to view the bits of the image at a time.

As for the Glasses I would go for an Eagle Pair of Green/Blue Blocking Glasses. They should cover the range of 390nm-532nm quite effectively. As for where to purchase them, your best bet is either survival lasers or on the B/S/T forums here.

EDIT: I realized post reply that size might be important to some people, and my best advice is to post a link to the pictures for people who are so inclined.

I'll check out a pair of the Eagle Pair glasses. Something like these?

I would see if any of the international folks would chip in on how best to acquire these overseas. There may be someone who has a pair they can sell you. Also check eBay.

These are the same glasses I use and they are splendid. They block almost all the light and I feel very safe when using them. And trust me, 1W of 445nm is exceedingly bright. You will want glasses for burning experiments or use indoors.

What you do, is of course, your prerogative. Sometimes when I know my laser isn't reflecting on me I remove my glasses and gaze upon the splendor of my 2.5W 445 laser. But know the risks, never have something bad happen to you and feel like you should have known better. If something happens, you should know that you knew the risks.

Awesome, I guess if the glasses are good I won't mind paying that price.

How about outdoors, would glasses for a "100mW" 532nm laser be needed?

Technically: yes. It will be brighter than you expect, and if you are around reflective surfaces, always wear them. However I do not worry nearly as much about a 100mW green as a 1W+ laser.

Okay, well when I get my paycheck I'll buy some goggles!

And then probably a 1W 445 laser a member on this forum is selling.

Nevermind. I found you a cheaper pair, and they are from a reputable member here. See this product: Blue Blocking Goggles.

I don't know what shipping would be like, but it would almost certainly be less than 65 bucks in the end.

Certainly cheaper!

On the description it said

"I tested a 1000mw 445nm laser on a pair of these and only ~1 mw passed through them."

If I'm planning on getting that, 1w445 shouldn't I get the other goggles ? Or would this work just fine?

It will work perfectly fine. 1mW is below the danger zone. Just don't keep the laser pointed on the goggle cause it might start to melt them. But a chance hit, nothing. You'll be fine. And thats what they're for. Chance hits. If one is foolish enough to point a 1W laser into his eye, one deserves the blindness that follows.

Awesome.

But they only seem to block the 400nm wavelength.

I also have a 100mW 532 laser.

Not sure if it would block that light.

Clif is the member here who owns and operates that site, feel free to PM him and ask him about it. Most of the Laser Safety Glasses I have seen for blue cover green as well, but better safe than sorry.
